Checking my email I see an email from a fairly well known marketer.

The subject line reads: Email Marketing Is DEAD.

REALLY?

REALLY?

Is that why you sent me an EMAIL TO TELL ME??

LOL!

I remember receiving an e-mail like that in 1999, then in 2004, then in 2005, 2006, etc. lol

It's on the decline, but it's FAR from dead.

I feel that email marketing has no death. It is indeed true that email marketing continues to be one of the most powerful and simple online methods of marketing. The greatest benefit that can accrue from email marketing is that it is cost-effective!

It's not dead, as we all seem to agree... haha.

Hell(heck?), I wouldn't even count physical mail down for the count yet. I used it successfully as late as 2011! :-P

As always... reach your audience they want to be reached.

Most of the emails are either marked as spam or just deleted. It takes a really good subject and email to get through the readers.

Sending your advertisements to people who want to receive them is - and has always been - key to the success of any campaign.

Email marketing is only dead for people who dont treat their subscribers like people and haven't built a relationship with them. My list has been nurtured since I started building it and to this day is highly responsive. My emails generate about 25% of my sites traffic now. If you bombared your list with offers then I agree its dead but it's only dead cause you killed it.

yeah i often see these subject lines or titles of articles

the fact is most people still use email to communicate on a daily basis

it works, its effective and wont be going anywhere anytime soon

even if it does slowly start to get more less effective the transistion period wont be overnight it will be 1 - 5 years more like

its all about the relationship you have with your list, this will mainly determine how effective your email marketing is

In my own opinion email marketing is not yet dead we can still get leads through it...It's just that internet through search engines is boosting..we'll just say we have to move on to the new ERA but email marketing do works...not all small businesses have their own website.

A simplified and compressed history of the whole email is dead meme:

The Wall Street Journal really got this whole email is dead meme going with an article about 2 or 3 years ago -- the WSJ being the authority on technology and trends that it is (sigh). The next bit of fuel on the non-existent fire was poured by a blogger at Hubspot, who didn't do his homework and incorrectly reported that Ben & Jerry's were dropping email in favour of social marketing. Not true responded the PR chief for Ben & Jerry's -- why didn't the intrepid blogger just ask them? DOH.

The Ben & Jerry's incident was fascinating because a sizable number of people out there (professional marketers who should know better among them) really seemed to want to believe that B&J had declared email marketing dead. The hubspot blogger eventually admitted he was wrong, but buried the correction so masterfully, that even if that could have made a difference, no one would notice it. Yes, ego is more important than truth when it comes to online media just like it is with print and broadcast.

When someone says ______is dead, they have an agenda and what they are really saying is, I have something else I want to promote or I don't know anything about _____but I think I know something (even if I really don't) about _____ and so it's what I want to push as the new thing.

Of course in fairness, we all have biases and that definitely includes myself. It's up to you to decide which marketing channels are the most effective in reaching your objectives. Keep your mind open and explore multiple channels -- each channel has it's own strengths and weaknesses. In most cases, a multi-channel approach is best, but do your research and make up your own mind.

Every social media network out there relies on email as a primary communication channel. In fact, anyone who tells you that it's email vs social is full of beans. Email is social! By definition, any interaction between two humans is a social interaction.

Mark Brownlow has created an entire site dedicated to providing stats to demonstrate email's viability here.

    Regards,
    jim

My point wasn't if email marketing actually does or does not work.

I was merely pointing out the irony of someone marketing to me, by sending me an email that says: Email Marketing Is Dead.

Dead is certainly not the right word, but it's harder today to make it work than a few short years back.

Now, it's about relationships or give up.

Now this is funny, I've also received the same email title as you from a very well known internet marketer! Hahaha it's obviously some promo again from this guy..

Well, talking about whether or not email marketing is dead, I've heard it countless of times already.. But interestingly, there are still a lot of people out there making money from their list alone (like the one who send us the same email, I believe he's making money from email marketing as well)..

So if email marketing is "dead"... I think I have problems with my eyes, because I'm seeing "Dead" man running everywhere.. this is NOT a April fool joke

    Jeremiah
P.S. Seriously, email marketing is far from dead, people are actually making a killing with email marketing.. Screw that email !

    Why are you surprised?

For one thing, its just a tactic to get you to open an email.

Also- as some have said- marketers have been saying this for years. Yet its still making IMers crazy $$$ if done right.

Oh, I'm not surprised at all that the email was sent out. And I understand the reason why it was sent. Just noting how comical it was to read.
