Looking for Help Regarding Reseller Accounts

Hi All,

I’ve built a number of affiliate websites using Wordpress templates. I’ve also purchased a number of themes with a view to offering websites to small local businesses. It wasn’t my intention to offer services to others until I’d gained more experience, but a friend has his own business and has asked if I can build a web site for him. So I’ve said yes!

He just wants a web presence and the ability to add content. He doesn’t want to get involved with domain name registration and hosting. He also wants an e-mail address in the format of support@domain.com.

All my sites are hosted on the same account. Should I be hosting his domain on a new hosting account or should I open a reseller account? If I open a reseller account, do I have to give him access to cPanel or can I just give him a username and password for his site, and set his access role to editor? Presumably I can set up the e-mail account and link it to Outlook?

What’s involved with running a reseller account? For example, I understand that I’ll be buying an allocated amount of disk space and bandwidth which I’ll have to allocate and offer as plans to clients. But what is a sensible size to offer? How can I learn more about this? I know Hostgator have a guide but you only get it once you’ve signed up and I’d rather know more before deciding what to do.

Appreciate any help.

Thanks

Amanda

    Hey Amanda,

I don't deal with reseller hosting, but I can offer a bit of advice to a fellow Warrior.

As someone who has dealt with customers face to face before...
Tell them as much of the Truth as you want Repeat Business from them.

If you treat them as an intelligent and respected client, you'll earn a chance to be referred. If you try to game them and they catch on, you'll never see another dollar from them.

With that out of the way, here's what I would do:

Buy the domain and host it on your own hosting. Create the domain, make all of the modifications he wants and get it to the point where he's ready to pay you.

Once he's paid, get it moved to *his* hosting account.
You can position it as a "cost saving measure", while it's also a bit of insurance for you. IT would suck to do 95% of the work and then never see a cent...

I realize that he's a friend, but if this works out for you, you may want to do more of it in the future. ;-)

This is another reason why it'd be beneficial for you to be his web host... it's hard to run away with your website if you can just take it down... haha

    Cheers and good luck,
    -Adrian

If you are planning on building more websites for people it would be easier to manage your business with a reseller account so you can provide each client their own separate cPanel login. But if you just going to be building a couple of sites for friends then just put them on your shared hosting account as add-on domains. You can always get a reseller account later if you end up really getting into this.
