Test Result Significance

Hi,

I've read from an old direct mailer that 20 sales is a reasonable measure of sign of significance. My current testing platform (Optimizely) says 100 conversions is a good rule of thumb.

I want to know how to better approximate these targets. I have an understanding of sample size and confidence interval but do not know how to compute how many conversions I would need to achieve significance at 95%.

Thanks for any help or references on this
