I feel like you really don't start making money online until you (1) Do something that you truly understand and have a modicum of natural talent at executing and (2) Provide something of real value to your audience

I agree completely. It's easy to get caught up in the making money aspect of things instead of the "What am I going to do to Earn this money?" part which is just as important.

It's pretty simple really, if you provide quality content or services then people will come to you. But, it is a fierce battlefield on the internet and you have to stand out from the competition to make it.

I failed two times.

One was in 2008 while I was trying to create an online business promoting my translation skills, writing, proofreading, all in spanish, and translation in both languages. I didn't promote myself well and I got frustrated after a few months.

The second time was in 2010 when I decided to give a try on PPC programs, online surveys. I got scammed a few times and I left those sites for good.

Did I learn from my mistakes? absolutely, I know by now exactly where I should never return hahahaha.

I can't say that I've ever really failed, some of my ventures did not bring in as much money as I had expected them to but I've always made money since Day One with Affiliate Marketing and List Building.

i've failed so many times that i've lost count...many attempts were back in the day when i was young and didn't know what i was doing...but even after that and after college i failed several more times...

but i don't really look at my past as failures...i look at it is learning experiences that taught me what it takes to succeed.

The way i see things is that you will fail until you have learned enough from past mistakes to succeed (unless you are one of the very lucky few who hit it big on the first try). The biggest thing is to learn from your mistakes, don't get discouraged, and keep trying till you get it right.

Your so right! Failure and success are two sides of the same coin!! I have yet to know anybody or read about anybody who after times of failure, only succeeds from here on out! Hopefully the successes outnumber the failures but if we're taking actions, we will always be succeeding and failing in different areas at the same time.

There is no such thing as failing.

There is only figuring out new ways that do not work for you. Figuring out a method or strategy you need to stop spending time on is a success in my book; it moves you to spending more time on things that will get you where you want to be.

I'm not sure I would call it failing, but it took me about 7 months until I started actually making decent money in IM.

I trained myself to death, WSOed myself up the backside, tried building adsense sites galore.

My adsense sites really never went anywhere, and were quite a bit of work.

However, at least I learned SEO, and site building skills to the point I could do services for others.

At that point, I start selling instead of buying.

Seems simple right? Yet it's the decision many many people never get to.

I now have a bunch of offline clients, many small, and a few large. Good recurring income.

And I'll be launching my first product in about 5 weeks or so.

I think for people who are really, really determined, they have probably lost count of "failures"...I even found my first keyword notebook the other day and totally forgot about the "amazing ideas" I had when I started which I never went through with.
As some people above have said, I think its more of a case of "learning" rather than seeing anything as a failure.

More times then I would care to mention, some not my fault some were. I did however learn that in some cases I was not persistent enough. It takes strength of mind to follow through and persist when you are all alone and have no one to answer to but yourself.

It depends on what you define "Fail" as.

I've made many mistakes in the past with my businesses, and even now.
I am still learning daily.

I can't say that any of my ventures have actually "Failed", because I think failure is more when you give up on trying at something.

Some just took a long time before I achieved "Success".

I've spent spent a year or 2 online with very low earnings, but I kept working at fixing all the little problems in my businesses, until they have become successful.

I think before getting my first 100$ i created about 70-80 sites and all of them failed as i experimented with them a lot

But i put all in my next site which in 2 months started earning about 600$/month

I failed hundreds of times... starting back in 2008 when I started a blog, put adsense on it, was getting $40/month by the 3rd month and then got my blog shut down by Blogger for "spamming." That's how I learned how bad duplicate content is! I continue to have failures every day - that's how you learn. If you think you're going to get it right the first time, well then you just failed! Good for you

I think success and failure are synonymous to each other.

For the fact that there is always a first time, we are bound to make mistakes.

And if we are going to ever be successful till thy kingdom come then we will need to keep learning those new things we are not familiar with and learning from our past.

I have lost count..........of the number of times i have failed and continue to fail but it has never been a barrier for me because each failure brings the light at the end of tunnel for me.

Hello,

I don't know if failure is the right term. I didn't make as much money as I thought I would, but nonetheless, I still made money. I tried adsense, when it was a craze and banked around $24 a month. Then I tried article writing and made around $50 a month. Now, I make a decent income offering services online.

The key with IM is failing forward. Work the heck out of the method. Learn as much as you can and bank as much as you can. If it isn't lucrative enough for your time & money = profits, then it's time to move on.

Failing forward is allowing to you to get closer to what you should be doing- finding out what you're really good at. Find that passion and that niche and you'll stick it out longer. Putting up with the grueling tasks, because you are passionate about it and believe in it. Then the money will come.

We can always learn from mistakes and failures ... with so many WSO promising the 'best moneymaking secrets', hard to imagine WSO buyers would fail :-)

Seriously, I believe lack of focus and lack of self-discipline are two of the major reasons we fail.

I've been puttering around for 10 years and haven't started a fulltime online business yet. The ironic part is for all these 10 years, I've been helping other people create successful websites from scratch or continue the growth of already successful offline businesses through online channels (website / facebook).

However, I wouldn't call it failing . . . I just didn't find a product or service unique enough and something that I was passionate about as of recently so let's see. I got the skills (10 years +) and now I got the product, let's see what happens - Wishing both of us good luck

Before making money? Well I never really failed before making money because I started out writing articles. However, once I decided to start building my own sites and starting learning how to do that, I failed several times. Normally it was little things like using the broad search when looking for keywords with adwords instead of the exact search. I would think I had just found a keyword that was going to make me rich only to find if I actually did get my site ranked I would be lucky to get a couple hits a day. Took lots of tweeking and learning, but it's a good thing to make mistakes so you can learn from them.

I made my first bit of dough in college. My cousin suggested that i send out a broadcast email, and when i woke up in the morning, i saw 2 orders out a list of 60 people.

Before that they, i was continuing to lose more and more money via advertising.

Failure doesn't exist in my opinion. What determines a failure or success? The way people judge you or the way you judge yourself? People make mistakes, but every mistake happens for a reason. The ones that avail in anything whether it be internet marketing or life in general are the ones who don't highlight failure, but realise mistakes when they occur and come back stronger learning from them. Just my two cents...

I don't know how do you count "fail" as failed but I did facing problems and solving problems everyday.

I believe you will always have problems and we need problems to help us to grow smarter and stronger. Successful people are bigger than their problems, mediocre people are smaller than their problems. And if you want to be RICH, find and solve bigger problems for more people.

I made money online by accident over 10 years ago. Since then, many of my ideas have failed. But many of them have panned out and succeeded. If I come up with an idea - i try it. That is the magic. Just try it.

I have had many failures and many successes, but the thing that I take most from it all is that my failures led directly to my successes. So at least in my case, I never would have succeeded had I not failed first. Just think of it as success training. Most important thing to remember is to keep getting back up.
