If you know php or html pretty well it means it's only a matter of minutes until you get used to wordpress and few hours to learn it all. It's very intuitive.

There's nothing Google loves about Wordpress blogs that you can't do with normal html.

Most of your revenue will come from your ability to market your products rather than anything to do with seo, so just do what you're comfortable with.

If you ensure it has good content, a sitemap, rss feed and good seo you'll be fine.

Andy ... SEO is good as well, especially when starting websites. And if you use the right plugins, you can do SEO with Wordpress very fast (for instance, how long will it take to update manually 20 pages with the right keywords and how long does it take using all in one seo pack?)

Of course you can do anything that wordpress does using html and php (wp is powered by php after all )

    I use both.

I think if you spent a few hours with WordPress that you would discover that it's easy to work with right out of the box and very easy to modify if you're so inclined. It's a very rich CMS system at it's heart.

The main reason for situations where I don't use it is where it's overhead would be overkill, such as for sales mini-sites.

I don't think that you'll see a huge difference between a SEO optimized WordPress blog and a SEO optimized HTML/PHP site. You would probably want to create a RSS feed for your static site but other than that things should be equal.
