Probably a really stupid question, but!!

Hi all,

I purchased a domain just over a month ago and as I'm doing an Alex Jeffries course at the moment I have installed a Squeeze Page via FTP and added it to my hosting account.

In the last month according to Hostgators 'website traffic' stats, I received 24,450 visits, and going through the further details, over 24,000 have been unique visits. I have also received about 90 signups for this squeeze page over the course of the month.

How is this possible when its a new domain with my name in the domain, I havent indexed it, or have I done any SEO yet!

This may sound like a stupid problem/question but I'm not a techie and want to know how this is possible with no promotion of any kind!

Any ideas please let me know!

Thankyou

I'd suggest you set up some additional tracking method. Something that can directly show you where the traffic is coming from (IE google analytics).

That is the only way you are going to have some insight.

Here is a question - was the domain you registered previously owned?

A lot of the stats programs included with hosting are not accurate, put google analytics on it to get the best idea of the number of visitors you are getting.

It really sounds like that domain was used before. Go to web.archive.org , use the wayback machine and see if there was actually a site there. Also, be sure to get a stats program installed like mentioned in the other responses.

90 signups for possibly untargeted traffic is awesome! You certainly need to get some analytics on your site so that you can see where its coming from and try to capitalize on it even more.

Are you promoting it in any way yet? Is traffic a part of the training program you are in?

Google analytics is the best tool to see the real traffic coming from for any website.

And there are many other paid tools.

    Best free tool is analytics.

I know you are looking for some techie answers, but I can't help but comment on what a wonderful problem you have. I also didn't realize this could happen on a domain that was used previously nor was I aware that google analytics could track WHERE the traffic is coming from...thanks for those posts

You should check where the hits are coming from.

But, you probably have the website indexed and don't know it. Most hosts, and I think Hostgator is included in this, automatically index your domain for you.

For example, before I did any SEO for one of my newer domains, I felt a need to type the URL into Google to see what would come up. Even though I only had a sample page up (from installing Wordpress), the domain was already indexed. I use JustHost, but I think Hostgator does the same.

Thanks for all your replies, I'm going to do a bit of research on the domain now to see if any one owned it, but highly unlikely as its (my sir name) Marketing Solutions dot com, and my sir name is'nt exactly a very common one so it would be one hell of a coincidence if it is an oldie!!!

Yes a great problem to have, gonna put analytics on it tonight and see, but the stats on hostgator are showing most of my sites with aroung 40-120 hits a daywhich is pretty accurate to the ones with analytics already on, but this one is getting close to 1000 hits a day, its averageing 700-900 every day!! bizzare, I'm half tempted to wack a sales page on there and see what happens!! lol

    Thanks again

I prefer statcounter.com to track where visitors are coming from. It's quite detailed
