What video file format do you prefer for downloads?

I'm finishing up a new WSO with a bunch of videos, and I am going to allow folks to view the videos AND to download them.

What format do you like when folks offer video downloads? I don't want to offer a bunch of different ones, but I want them to work as easily as possible on Mac and Windows and Linux.....

The recordings start out as AVI files, but I have the tools to make them MP4, or MOV, or WMV, or FLV or.... (you get the picture)

Thanks!!

FLV is best. AVI and WMV is wayy too large.

I'll use FLV for the live streaming version - just about everyone has a flash player in their browser. However, lots of folks don't have an easy way to play it outside of their browser. Yes, there are free players that would handle it, but I'm trying to make it as easy as possible.

So far - sounds like MP4 is likely to be the way to go.

Flash players play MP4 just like they do FLV, so it's easiest to run MP4, stream it via Flash, and allow a file download for the peeps.

Another reason I like MP4 format is because I can watch
the videos in QuickTime and control the playback speed
        much better.

If the presenter talks slow or I want to get through
the material faster, I just go to the A/V controls in
QuickTime and speed it up, e.g. 1.5 times.

So, another vote for MP4 from me.

Yep, you can do that with VLC as well, if you don't have Quicktime.

MP4 definitely. That's what I use for all my membership sites and I've never had a complaint out of thousands and thousands of members. MP4 gives by far the best size/quality ratio.

Also, I don't like Quicklime to play those files. I've always found it a really slow program. The best free software for video files nowadays is VLC media player. Just search Google for it. By far the best.

Thanks all - I appreciate the input.
I'm going to go with MP4, and I'll put a link to VLC player for anyone that needs it.
