You drive traffic to a squeeze page. On that page, you offer a free gift in return for the prospects email.

They either opt-in, or they exit the page.

You can collect emails in return for discount coupons on your site...Not only will people happily subscribe to your list but they will actively seek more offers from your end as well.

Yes yes and yes. In short it is one of the most powerful marketing techniques and if you get it right, your buyers will literally be crawling to buy anything you offer them. It's basically relationship building. Offer value and nurture your list.

most autoresponders offer a light box pop up. That will increase sign up conversions on your site

how do i go about setting this up? Im not sure what my first step is with my website, its on an ecommerce package. Do i have a link on my homepage which say something like 'claim your free gift today' and on this they send me their email address, when i receive this i send them something like 10% discount code and then they come back and use it? with the 10% code have expiry date so they need to use it before runs out?

Just want to make sure i understand it as never done list before.

Rather than dealing with the e-mails individually, you
need to use what is called an autoresponder.

In your shoes, an autoresponder service like AWeber
      would be ideal IMO.

They have a 30-day $1 trial and they have great
support and training where they'll help you get set-up
      properly:

Email Marketing Software & Email Marketing Services from AWeber (no affil.)

They'll give you some HTML code to copy and paste
onto your site so that you can display an opt-in
      form.

As you're selling physical goods, then you'll need TWO
      lists at a minimum:

      1. Prospect List - for people who sign-up at your site,
e.g. for a discount coupon, etc.

      2. Customer List -
      for customers who have already
purchased at least one of your product line. Then
you use this list to send them relevant e-mails and
      offers.

Study what Amazon do with their e-mails, e.g. their
follow-up e-mails typically thank the customer for
their purchase and have the magical phrase "customers
who bought product1, also purchased product 2, etc"
      to induce further purchases.

      Dedicated to mutual success,

You should have an optin on your main website.

Or a bold graphic on your site, or a slideup/popup that links to a squeeze page with some kind of appealing offer for your website visitors.

I would setup a squeeze page for some type of special offer and then promote the page. You can promote it on your main websites with a bold graphic or better a timed popup or slideup.

On a site like yours, a timed popup or slideup would help with optins. Slideup is less annoying and still allows the user to shop and view your content. The slideup can be seen after maybe 15-20 seconds on your site. Slides up from the bottom and promotes your page.

Another option is an exit popup. When people try to leave your site, a popup comes up and you can promote the special offer on your squeeze page. Visitor clicks the popup and goes to your squeeze page where you may get the contact information of the visitor.
