How do you use forums effectively for sending traffic to your site?

I understand the importance of using forums related to your niche to generate targeted traffic to your site.

However, the problem I'm finding is there seems to be so few which allow a link back to your site if you are selling any products; I have an Amazon affiliate site in the food/cooking niche

Here is an example of a forum which is in my niche and seems to attract a lot of visitors. However in their guidelines it states...

"The board is NOT to be used by commercial entities to promote or sell products of any kind. Trade / Business advertising will result in an immediate ban"

Suggestions? What do some of you do? Is there a way of searching forums in Google which allow links back to your site?

Hey, what you want to do is offer real advice and answers to questions, but then keep your link in your description somewhere, or your signature. This way its not like "spamming" but you eventually will drive traffic to your site.

    I hope that helped,

If you try to put a link in your post, in my view it looks even more like spam, as you have to find a very specific thread where you can place a link to your site, especially if you're an Amazon affiliate. Forum moderators probably hate that, or I maybe I'm wrong...

I treied registering with 5 forums today all in the cooking niche with good traffic, but either they don't allow signatures or they don't allow links to commercial sites which advertise products

What you don't want to do is register today on a bunch of cooking forums and then start promoting your stuff.

Take it easy. Wait a few weeks, maybe 2 weeks, and then start placing the links in your profile. If you can, also in the signature.

Talking about signatures, "cloak" your links, try quiet colors, not the blue standard link color.

    Cheers,

Forum Signature Marketing is as bad as Article Directory Marketing.
You are trying to use the forum for something it was not meant to do,
and the results are about as good. (Read: Terrible!)

Worse, many forum owners started their site with the hopes of
making some money for themselves, and if you are using the common
(terrible!) advice of trying to do Forum Signature Marketing in your
"niche" forums, many Admin/Owners are going to feel like you are
    their direct competitor.

Think of what the word "Forum" means... It is a meeting place
for people of like mind to come together and discuss things that
are important to them. Imagine for example if you went to your
church and started trying to answer everyone's questions about
religion, and then asked for a donation at the end of every speech!

Or if you went to your local trade association meeting, where the
organizers often make their money through agreed advertising
contracts, and you started trying to market for free. Not only
does it make you look cheap, but it also offends the organizers.

Often times, marketers swamp young and struggling forums
with all sorts of offers and all sorts of things. Junk marketers
with programs like XRumer and it's clones SPAM them to the
point that they hate people who don't share their passion and
are only trying to make money by leeching off their work.

There is a proper way to market in forums, and it begins with
following the rules and paying for advertising when it is
available. Then connect with people and make real friendships
so that you can make recommendations rather than acting
like you need to give your business card to every person you
    come across.

Or, keep on trying the methods 99% of the other people who
post in this thread are going to advise you of. (Which they
are attempting to use themselves, LOL). Let me know how
that works out for you, and whether it is a life-changing
    experience.

Amazon affiliate sites can be difficult to link to on forums.

Some forums hate it when you link straight to a selling page. Which is why many people link to a website home page or blog instead.

If it was me, and I seen that in the guidelines I wouldn't bother. You'll start to make a name for yourself on the forum... Then one of the moderators will check out your link and ban you.

Try some other forums. Have a browse around all the forums in your niche and see if there are any other members with websites like yours in their signature link.

    Good luck!

I would definitely build some sort of authority on a subject you're promoting before starting to push your products. You want to bring some quality to the forum and most importantly know the subject you're talking about.

This is another thing everyone seems to claim, and I can only imagine that it is because there are so many engineers trying to be marketers? Forum credibility is not going to make you much money.

But don't take my word for it. Go ahead and test it for yourself. Let me know when you can quit your day job and work full time in forum marketing.

Who said it had to generate "quit your day job" level money? How about generating "make your car payment" money?

There IS money to be made via forum marketing. And I say that as someone who quit their day job 8 years ago. Heck, I bet there's at least 2 or 3 Warriors making money here doing it. But only 2 or 3.

There are thousands(if not more) of forums in any given niche. You just have to keep looking until you find forums that will allow what you're trying to do. When you find them, look around and notice how others are doing things so you can get a feel for the accepted protocol. Once you find them, you have to be willing to contribute to the community though. Just making silly posts to get your sig out there isn't going to work.

Good point, but I could never aim so low,
it's just foreign to my thought process
I suppose. But thanks for pointing it out.

To clarify, my claim is not that there
is a lack of money in forum marketing.
On the contrary, I have said that it
is among the best methods for making
          money there is.

My claim is that putting up a good
signature link and being helpful is not
the most effective method, and that
mere "credibility" trust is never as
          profitable as "friendship" trust.

I find leads from forums are some of the most targeted leads you can get. Your conversions will go up as well if you're precieved as an authority figure in the particular forum you're getting your leads from as well.

...Gotta give stellar content and help a lot of people out though to become an authority figure.

Not only will you be able to claim your share of traffic but forums provide you with the opportunity to quickly build brand awareness, so that you are recognized as an authority in your market. You will need to spend time providing quality information to the community, as well as helping members by addressing questions, offering guidance, and doing your best to contribute to the network, but it's one of the easiest ways to jumpstart your website, absolutely free.

Allocate 1 hour a day to marketing your business via community forums, but make sure to promote INDIRECTLY! You want your website to be seen within your forum's signature box, rather than in spamming your link within discussion threads or posts, otherwise you'll lose your account and likely end up banned from the community. You also want to focus only on active, established forums, keeping in mind that your posts will be quickly indexed, sending additional traffic to your website from the search engines directly.

Make sure to optimize your forum profile as well! This is a great way to generate authority backlinks to your website, so include information about you, and a direct link to your website!

    Finding Niche Based Forums

You can locate relevant forums by visiting www.bigboards.com and searching for available community boards by entering in keywords relating to your market or by browsing through available categories.

Using Search Engines To Locate Forums: When you've compiled a decent list of forums, you'll put that list aside temporarily and then start using the search engines to find more. When using the search engines like Google , you want to search for two particular types of phrases:

    "keyword or keyword phrase" forum

"keyword or keyword phrase" message board

Put some of the more popular keywords for your particular niche inside the quotes and remember to search with quotes since you want an exact match for your search.

You don't have to get too extensive since you want the easiest to find forums instead of those that have used SEO extensively to get themselves listed higher in the rankings.

When you're satisfied with your preliminary list of forums that you want to try, go to Alexa.com and do a search for each. You'll be able to get their current traffic statistics as well as their rank on the web.

If the site was listed as a popular site on big-boards.com and is still popular on Alexa.com, then it's probably a forum you should put at the top of your list.

Additional Resource: Complete Forum Directory (with alexa ranking, etc):
    Hope that helps

I'm not sure posting on forums can truly drive a significant amount of traffic to your site, but it will help get some people interested. To truly get traffic you need to rank well and use ppc, otherwise it will be difficult, unless you have a product that no one else offers.

Help others to help yourself. If you post valuable posts in forums then others will be interested to see what you have. Other wise driving traffic from a forum is hard. I guess.
