I think I suck at this

I know I've only been at this whole IM thing for about a week and a half. But I really thought I'd have seen more progress by now.

No, I didn't think I'd make millions (or even thousands over night.) But as it stands now, after about 11 days of work, my site only has 400 views and 1 adsense click. Totaling a whopping $1.38. None of my affiliates has sold at all. And I'm currently ranking between 39-45 on google for my primary keyword. My ebook hasn't sold any copies from my site or even on fiverr. It's like I can't give that thing away. I'm writing an article every other day and so far the only comment on any of them has been from some blogger just adding his backlink.

The only upside is I have a page where people can submit their pictures to win a free copy of my ebook and I got 5 submissions. That was from a post on reddit.

Is this the normal progress? Is this slower than usual? I don't have unreal expectations. I'm not expecting hundreds of dollars to roll in overnight. But I didn't think it was too big of a goal to try to earn $50 my first month. At this rate, $10 seems impossible.

I actually think that's pretty good progress if you only started 10 days ago.

The bottom line is, you won't see great results until you're getting a fair amount of targeted traffic. This only comes with organic rankings, social traffic or paid advertising. You need to really understand how to get traffic from one or all of those methods before you will have much success.

That's not bad. It took me about 2 weeks to get my first sale on Clickbank, so getting your first adsense click in 11 days is decent progress.

Keep in mind, there are people who literally go months or even years before making a single dime. You are not doing so bad at all.

    Hmmm.......

A week and a half eh?

If I remember back to when I first started out 11 years ago I spent probably about one month and a half just trying to figure out what internet marketing was ha ha ha and then a lot longer figuring out what I had to do to make some money so it sounds to me like you are making normal progress at the very least in a week and a half for someone who seems to be brand new.

Theres many people out there online a very long time who never even make their first dollar so that alone may by some be considered an achievment.

My first question would be what is your site about and how have you been working on it ie what have you been doing to get it ranked and drive traffic etc.

FYI, it took me nearly 2 years before I had my first profitable month. Now I've made well into 6-figures every year since 2005!

It just takes a certain amount of experience and knowledge before you can really start having success.. Don't give up!!

My word. Rome was not built in a day and neither was the internet. There is no guarantee that having a website, affiliate schemes and an ebook will make you money. Hard work will increase your website traffic, which will hopefully convert to sales. Good luck.

Instant success is rare. It would be insane to think that you could just set up a new website and have decent income. In time yes you certainly can. Also users are very wary of who and what they buy from people.

I guess its a user having trust in you and then they are prepared to truly listen to what you have to say (or click and buy a product). Progress can be slow, the challenge will be not giving up.

I'm actually impressed at how well you've progressed in 11 days. You should see Internet marketing as a marathon and not a sprint. Success, comes from studying the numbers. By getting a grip on the numbers, you can identify, specifically where you need to tweak what you are doing.

400 visitors to your site in 11 days ....you should be proud of yourself. OK, you haven't got the sales to show for it yet. Remember, individuals often have to see your offer between 7 and 10 times, before they are 'sold' on what you are offering.

I'd say you have been successful in those ten days. You might need to manage your expectations a bit though.

Making money with IM is hard work and rarely does instant success happen. Keep working as hard as you have been, investing more into your efforts (time/money) and you will increase your odds of earning more.

I've been building websites for just over 8 months. I've made about $75 in Adsense so far. I kept doing things wrong and having to start over. Then I made the mistake of using BMR so I'm rebuilding again. I'm not giving up yet. One of my newer websites is just starting to pick up in traffic, it has 1200 unique visitors for April so far. I know if I keep writing good articles, the money will come eventually.

Another way to help with your rankings are creating quality backlinks to your website. One really easy way to do that is to creat a signature on THIS forum. For example right below this message (as well as many others that have responded to you) you will see a "signature". It's a link back to your website! for FREE!!!!

    Who doesn't like free???

PS - I'm a super newb and just getting into this (as in 8 days ago). It's really cool to see that you are having some success with your adsense - I definitely would like to try that. Good luck!

Success comes from the persistence of continuing to work even when things aren't working out.

You do have unreal expectations if you think a few adsense sites and some affiliate links are going to make you a lot of money in only 11 days. Maybe you're looking at too many $60,000 in 30 Days push-button, easy schemes.

I would recommend not reading anything IM for the next 3 months and concentrate on business fundamentals like creating value, selling, and buyer psychology.

Building a business isn't like getting a job where there's a paycheck one to two weeks later. Entrepreneurship exists in a results-based economy. If you don't produce results, you don't get paid.

Said another way, if you don't find a way to provide a high-quality solution to a market's problems or desires, you won't get results.

If you stick with it and learn business fundamentals you'll succeed.

E-mail blasting is always good, I would focus on some PTC advertising, 1 because its cheap and 2 you might get some good leads. After that then move on to the big advertisers, Adwords always gives away free $100.00 ad credits, try using one of those as well.

A week and a half? That is not time at all to even begin to think about quitting already. You have to have a lot of patience when it comes to Internet Marketing. So many people I know think this is a get rich quick scheme and when I tell them what I had to go through before I started seeing money they back away fast. Yes it does take a lot of time and a lot of hard work but trust me it is very much worth it so keep going. You are doing great so far.

      Joe,
Build My Rank is no more. All their sites have been deindexed by Google. I think we'll see many more blog link networks go away soon.

Private link networks are and will continue to be powerful tools for the next couple of years.

Thanks for the words of encouragement guys. I guess putting it into perspective helps me see things a bit more clearly. I should be happy with what I have so far. I've just been slaving away at it, expecting even a minor reward. It's just taking a lot more than I thought.

For those that asked, my site is badfoodfordogs.com Those keywords ranked really well in google, over 9k a month with low comp and I was able to get the exact .com domain. I felt pretty good about it. I started it with the idea of just promoting a clickbank product about dangerous dog foods. I got some feedback from one or two people wanting some reviews for good dog foods, so thats when I started promoting amazon products as well. I plan to monetize through relevant clickbank and cj products, amazon products, and adsense. I also have an ebook on there (dog treat cookbook) that I'm selling for $5 through fiverr. I'd like to sign up with ejunkie, but I've already dropped $200 on this site so far, and I'm just not going to spend anymore until I get paid back my original investment.

So for now, I'm just writing articles and uploading dog pictures people send me. Some good news, I hit #17 on google this morning. That got my spirits up a bit. I've manually backlinked through some other dog sites and paid a guy on fiverr to backlink some for me.

There's 2 ways to think about this...

    1) if you're ready to give up after a week and a half then you might as well give up now... or...

    2) if you've already taken action and made money then you're not off to a bad start. Keep pushing and learning and taking action and before it you'll be there. Progress is rarely linear. You usually jump from where you're at now to $100/day in a short time span.

Earlgray - I wouldn't give up yet if you're confident you've got a product/service that people want (ie; you've done your testing before launching) - your experience is very normal.

If you haven't done your testing, then I'd consider do so before putting any more effort into the marketing side of things. No point trying to sell something people don't want.

  • Earlgray,

First of all, congratulations on making money online. That is a feat that 90%+ of us do not achieve, and for you to do that in 11 days- speaks to your commitment to building your internet business.

But don't give up so quickly. If your business was a "brick & mortar' business, would you be so ready to give up? You just started. Keep going. As a matter of fact- duplicate what you did to get the results & see what you can do incrementally to improve your metrics. Track & analyze everything.

Congrats again & best wishes... and BTW- if you sucked at this, you would have made all that effort and earned "jack-diddly-squat"
