Anybody in here consider social media marketing to be a form of IM?

I've been having a lot of success marketing on Facebook - quite by accident - and it led me to wonder if anyone in here considers social media marketing to be a form of Internet Marketing.

I don't want to ignore the obvious - the fact that social media is online!

...but I am curious to know what some of the IM purists think and would love a discussion.

After being in this game since 2010 and watching traffic-getting tactics change so much in the past few years, I wonder how people view social marketing. I'm in direct sales and every, single one of the past 20+ sales I made came from social marketing that I did on purpose.

I have been through the hoops with backlinking, article marketing (the right way and the wrong way...LOL!!), video marketing, etc...and what has brought me the best results has been actually getting to know people, staying in from of them socially, and finding myself living the dream that so many of us seek online.

Anyway...all of that aside, I might have missed conversations about social media marketing here on the WF because I spend more time working instead of reading here like I used to.

Thoughts?

Any other successful social marketers out there like me?

Social media marketing is very big at this moment, and will only grow in the next years, the way facebook ads can target users is great for example

I don't know about IM purists so to speak but I would say SMM is definitely Internet Marketing.

Well...the reason I asked is because I rarely see threads devoted to how to do it well. It's not enough to just go onto Facebook and chat with everyone. That's not marketing. That's socializing...and while, over time, people just get to know you by default, there's a way to do it well and a way to do it poorly or by accident (like I did originally.)

I have a good friend who is an Adsense master. It seems like he can rank in 30 days or less for just about anything. He just puts his head down and gets to work.

I tried that and it bored me to tears. The day to day work was not what I imagined doing for any length of time. I am an introvert, so being out in public didn't work when it came to building my business...but being online and socializing seemed to suit me very well.

When I shared with him that I was going the social route for traffic generation last year, he literally huffed at me. I don't automate my tasks, and there are certain things that I do Monday through Friday. My steps are planned, and the results are predictable within a week. I guess what I am looking to do is have a quality conversation about social media marketing and share techniques with people who are doing it well and who are noticing patterns.

For example...last year, it was enough to go make comments on 30+ personal profiles and be active in one high-quality group. This year...NOT. Not at all!

This year, I notice that I had to switch up what I was doing almost 100% because users seem to be becoming more desensitized to socialization. I rarely talk about business off of my own wall (unless I am syndicating someone's content), so I don't get the change...

...but it's one that I notice has happened for others who are full-time as well.

      *shrug*

Thanks for the feedback. I was feeling a teench bit alone on my social island.

Cool...first thing I have been thinking about. And thanks, by the way!

A woman I am consulting told me last week that she would NEVER open her wall. She owns a traditional home business and is afraid that she would get fired from her full time job by being so open.

I told her that if her wall is private, strangers have no opportunity to see what kind of person she is, and they will likely not do business with her. Most people like to lurk first...and second...and third...

I told her to make everything public and stop talking about her personal life. Period. I told her not to GIVE people things to dislike about herself. She took my advice and her business literally turned around overnight.

With the Google Plus-like privacy flexibility that Facebook now has, it's a lot easier to segment out what you want to share. I keep some things between
myself and my hubby or just family members...but for 98% of my wall....everything is out in the open so people can actually get to know me.

So...I never share intimate details of my life - except on the blog...but that site has a few different purposes, so I have to share more there.

Did you do all the work yourself on the site or did you outsource?

I just re skimmed and saw that is you singing ! WOW impressive.

Folks, this is a true lesson in transparency....

Also Christi, did you set up all the social accounts yourself?
I am looking for a reasonable outsourcer to do such

Thanks for the singing compliment. I have to credit Mr. Donald Robinson with production. I lucked up when I was younger and got the guy who helped make Vanessa Williams and Rachelle Ferrell famous when they started singing. He was my producer and is still a very good friend.

I don't have a LOT of social accounts. I have Facebook, and I am a very reluctant Twitter-er. Very reluctant. As a matter of fact, I dislike Twitter a lot...just cannot wrap my head around building real relationships in 140 characters.

            I know that's a lame excuse. *shrug*

So...no...I do not outsource and I do not do anyone's stuff for them. I do all my own work and tell people what they need to do for free. Why charge for what you can probably figure out by just watching me???

I jumped on the OnlyWire bandwagon when it first became popular, but I found that it really isn't necessary to be everywhere. Just be very good in one place and have a nice blog.

            Sorry I can't help more.

Oh...you know what...if you reach out on Facebook...I am sure that some of my friends know people who do that type of stuff. Either reach out there or send me a PM. I am sure I know someone who knows someone. Everyone I know does their own work...and they maybe use a little automation here and there.

            • Ms. Johnson,

You won't get far here accusing people of being rude and playing the poor pitiful misunderstood victim.

So far color me unimpressed with your social marketing acumen. You've said nothing of substance, nothing that establishes your bona fides. It seems Paul Barrs was right after all.

Johnson, I'm wondering if you're just trying to promote your signature link by posting this question.... it's almost silly.

The use of marketing via social media is but one of dozens of different "marketing methods", of course.

Five years ago people may have thought different, but not anyone who has come out from under the rock since.

Paul...that was rude...and very uncomfortable for no reason.

I have been on here since 2010, but I didn't know what I was doing when I started working online. I participated in basically NO conversations other than thanking people or asking questions. I got a LOT of value though.

I haven't come from nowhere. You're right. Promoting my signature would be lame...and obvious.

I asked the question because it's a legitimate one that I have. I actually need to start interacting with people in my space a lot better and more frequently. Unlike most people who come here, I am not looking to create a Warrior offer and eventually rise to fame in the IM world. When I stopped interacting here last year, I went to Facebook and got to WORK.

Now...I will admit that when I came on here this morning, I recognized that my signature and info don't line up with what I do for a living now. In days past, the number of comments you have made on this forum would have intimidated me into hiding. I am both introverted and shy...and people like you tend to scare me.

But I came on here with a real question, looking for real conversation.

If you are not going to contribute and participate with me in a way that speaks of common courtesy, then please just read. I'm a War Room member who has lurked for some time. It hit me that I actually need to socialize with potential peers here. Notice my signature goes to a real blog and I am a normal, low-key, Army wife and home schooling mother. I make my living doing what I do now.

There's nothing but transparency going on here.

What happens with me, however, is that I get so caught up in marketing on Facebook that I rarely have down time to do actual conversing with others in the field.

That said...do you social market as well? I have a lot of catching up to do here. I have a lot of quality conversations with people on Facebook...but absolutely none here. There's nothing wrong with desiring to represent my space well...and who cares when I start doing it elsewhere?

What matters is that I start at all. *hugging myself* lol

    Johnson,

Like Paul I think you are just doing a bit of shameless promotion.

Your signature link says it all.

Hey, I have a signature link too but my suggestion is that is you be honest and upfront and post some useful content for other Warriors on how to use Social Media to build their businesses.

I am sure you could be on immense value to others in here rather than to post using this type of tactic.

    Cheers

Thanks for your opinion, Anton...but you have me wrong. It's ok, and I don't take it personally. If I were anyone but myself, I would probably see myself the same way...but I know why I came on today. You can read my response above so I don't have to write it again.

Only thing I will say is that the reason I haven't participated much here is because you guys tend to pounce first and ask questions later. That method of initial interaction can actually be frightening for a person like myself. So...I avoided it. I hate posting on WF sometimes.

I did change my siggy this morning, but that's professional. Anyone would do the same.

      *waiting on a real conversation...*

Absolutely.. In fact it's one of the most popular and most utilized forms of Internet Marketing. Social Networks whether you are using some type of paid advertising such as ppc on Facebook, or you are starting your own fan pages and marketing though that, you are able to reach a large audience and that's what marketing is all about.

They were rude, Fluff, and you are being so also. Did you even look at her blog? Or read her OP? She IS a successful social media marketer.Meaning she is making a living at it. I only just met her today right here in this very thread.Yes, She could have title her thread differently, such as " I dont see too many social marketing threads..."
or, " Any social marketers who want to socialize?" or whatever...
And who are you to tell someone how she should feel? She PM'd me that she indeed was genuinely rattled by these guys.
