Blog leads vs Solo Ad leads?

When I read posts about list building the current favourite traffic source seems to be solo ads, but has the quality improved recently?
2 years ago I generate several thousand leads from solo ads, but the quality was terrible. My pages would convert brilliantly, but as I had to the return mailings I was just burning my existing list by sending them to pages which I wasn't exactly sure matched my standards.
Now compare this leads generated through my blog, sure the numbers are much lower, but these people are opting into my list because they like the content I'm putting out, and I don't have to send tell them about another marketer's squeeze page.
I know that you can just buy the solo ads now rather than having to do reciprocal mailings, but with prices in 3 figures it's getting harder to turn a profit.
If the solo ad bubble is about to burst in 2012 what will replace it?
