What is considered a bad bounce rate ?

My site gets about 20 visitors a day now. And I am relatively sure it is quality traffic since it is mostly organic with keyword sources that should be my exact target market (not much competition since I created the product+ some patent stuff).

However my home page drop off rate is 70% (bounce rate 80%) and I only get about a 1% conversion rate.

Should I get my site redesigned?

If so, do you have any recommendations of where to get it redesigned (I was thinking 99 designs but that is pricey, and I don't even know if they could install it on a shopify account)?

    The questions here are:

    What interactive tools do you have one your site..videos, fanpage links or links to other interesting articles...

    Does your header have a great design..

    Do you have interesting pictures - maybe yours, or a cartoon replica

    Do you have ads littered everywhere

    Does your homepage a clean design interface

    These are small tips that will definitely enhance your visitor experience and reduce your bounce rate significantly.

      It has a how to video, nice design, header is a bit weak, 0 ads, and I think decent pictures.

      Is there anything else I should try?

    Ok I checked it out. Nice design and layout.

    I however did not immediately recognize what it was you're actually selling, and how helpful it is to the buyer. You must let your visitors know what you're offering in a second. Best done with a picture, but the pix did not really help me much.

    Also got me thinking about your traffic source. Poorly targeted traffic will usually bounce very high.

      My two highest converting sites have some of the worst bounce rates - 86% and 88%. The traffic is extremely targetted and they make good money (one over 4 figures), but if Google really do start taking the bounce rate into consideration I could be in trouble!

      One thing I do know is that the way I have these two sites optimized I couldn't possibly improve the bounce rate without drastically decreasing the conversion rate.

      I too didn't know what the product was at first. Work on your unique selling proposition.

      Also that logo is a little blurry and hurts my eyes, maybe consider redoing that. Although it shouldn't have much of an effect on your bounce rate.

      Stick a tag line under the logo, you don't need to take up that whole space with just the logo.

    You are "relatively sure" that it is good traffic meaning you aren't completely sure.

    Couple that with the fact that you have such low traffic and I would say that you don't have enough valid information to really know if your site is great or medium or not or converting or not.

    I wouldn't make any changes without getting more quality targeted traffic first.

    I can send 20000 garbage clicks to a site with high bounce and low conversions or I can get 100 very targeted clicks to a site with 75% conversions and low bounce rate adn they stay on the page a long time and look at other pages.

    It is all about the quantity of QUALITY traffic first. Then, if you are sure you are getting that and STILL not converting, then look at minor changes.

    I have been amazed at the very minor tweaked I've made to squeeze pages and headlines on blog posts that turned them from not converting to converting.

    From my experience, its depends on how relevant the content on your site is to the visitors that are coming.

    For example: I was running a PPC campaign with Adwords just in the State of GA and the Bounce rate was at 50%. This was due to the fact that our office is in GA.

    But when I changed the Geo-Targeting to all of USA, the traffic more than tripled, but the bounce rate went up to 65%.

    What's significant about this is that the visitors from Ga still had a bounce rate of less that 50% (When I checked analytics), but the general US traffic was well above 65%.

    That change made it clear that the local visitors found the content more relevant to their problem.

    What I suggest for you is that you start to pay more attention to conversions and work your way backwards to when dealing with the bounce rate. You should really try to build enough data to figure out what common characteristics your customers have and try to target them in your campaigns. Look for common keywords searched by visitors who converted.

    First and foremost, make sure you have a complete sales funnel. If you have an optin page, then you can have a higher lead retention rate.


    And to be honest, 20 organic visitors a day is really little traffic.

    Basically, before you try to figure out how many people you are losing for every 100 visitors, you should focus on how many people you are "gaining" or "converting" out of every 100 visitors.

      Thanks for all the input.

      For the site I'll:
      -clean up the logo and make it smaller
      -Redesign the initial slideshow photo since I think the wording is kind of bad
      -then I think I'll run one of those market tests from usertesting.com or Google consumer surveys to see if people in my market get the product in the first 5-10 seconds

      I think I will startup a facebook ad campaign (since everything until this point has all been organic searches). That should give me a decent amount of cheap visitors so I can guage interest better.

    Have a look at your headline + elements above the fold to improve (reduce ) your bounce rate.

    Yeah I would focus on a stronger headline. It is hard to determine what you're selling at first. That will reduce bounce rates if the headline is very interesting.
