How exactly are authority sites built?

I mean, does authority site cover a bunch load of topics and aim to rank for a lot of keywords?

And if so, where could you find that much of information to put on your newborn authority site without plagiarizing others?

Yes they revolve around a certain niche, usually 50+ pages, and rank for 100's of keywords. They are also monetized via adsense, amazon, cj.. etc. Multiple streams of income.
There's a lot of content that needs to be written targeted towards each keyword you are trying to rank for. Most of the articles should be 500-1000 words. I would suggest outsourcing all the content writing.

An authority site, while catering to a niche, basically gives a comprehensive and indepth coverage of several sub-niches under that niche. And yes, as rightly pointed out, it takes a lot of time and patience to develop individual authority for each keyword you are trying to rank for. However, once up and running, authority sites are extremely profitable.

You must look at an authority site as a long term strategy. One can can give you a solid income for many years, maybe even for the rest of your life. You need a lot of patience but it's really worth it.

Authority site = Trusted source of information

Beyond that, it's a pretty relative term.

Typically, most people think of authority sites as having 100+ pages of content, however, you can have a 25 page site be considered as an authority site just as easily. It just depends on the quality of content and the niche you're in. For example, if you're aiming to be an authority in the "health" niche, that's going to require a lot more content than being an authority in the "bodyweight exercises" niche. You see what I mean?

Authority could also be measured by "reach"... So for example, you could have a small website with a HUGE list or HUGE number of followers/fans/whatever and consider yourself an authority.

To be an authority you need to offer:
    • Quality information
    • In-depth information
    • Correct information
    • Experiential information (preferably)
I hope that helps answer your question!

I like Stephens definition, "Trusted source of information".

It's not us that determines if a site is an authority site, it's the customer. Are you giving them what they want. If they come back will they find new content. If it doesn't provide what they're looking for does it offer external links.

From a customers point of view an authority site is more interested in helping *them* then making money from them.

Customers are getting wiser... they really don't like ad spam sites; they like sites that give them the info they want all in one place.

So far everyone has explained what authority sites are, but how would you actually start to build an authority site?

I mean, it's preferably to choose a niche that you are interested in, familiar with... but it's pretty hard for a person to know a crap load of information on one subject (unless perhaps you're a professor?).

So, how can you gather that much information? outsource to write articles? and how often are the updates? etc, etc.

I have been thinking about setting up an authority website and it would be good to see where this goes.
