How long before backlinks take effect?

Just a quick question Warriors- I started a linking campaign about two weeks ago, submitting to a couple link directories, submitted articles and some bookmarking sites, but I still can't see any backlinks to my site yet.
How long does it take before I will actually see my backlinks show up in say- yahoo site explorer? Do they have to be spidered in order to be seen? And would I see the seo effects of this linking right away or only after the backlinks are visible?

thanks in advance for your help.

Agree with Tommy, Google is always STINGY as hell when it comes to acknowledging backlinks.

I just started a site last week, and have been doing similar rss submission and directory submission, some of the small search engines say I have over 50 already, yahoo says and handful, and google of course says None.

Even though I am linking site wide from 3 of my other blogs straight to my home page. All of which are registered with google blogs/webmaster tools

You'll start to see the results

Some notes... (all just my experience/thoughts)
      1. Yes, Google is "stingy" with showing backlinks, but I believe that they really know about all your backlinks. Just my gut, because my linking affects/boosts my SERPs on Google.
      2. There can be a big difference in results between "http://www.domain.com" and "http://domain.com" and "https://www.domain.com" and "http://domain.com" and "domain.com" and the "www.domain.com" version of your site. I believe it depends on the syntax of your actual backlinks.
      3. For me, the only real authority I trust on the real number of backlinks is Yahoo Site Explorer.
      4. I can see some backlinks within 2-3 days of creation, and some take a week or more. I don't know why the disparity
      Can anybody share different experiences?

Google just doesn't want people gaiming them by checking competitors backlinks and then copying what they have done. Just because a link doesn't show in Google doesn't mean you haven't been credited with it...

If you want to find out your backlinks try Alltheweb.com link:yoursite.co.uk search Web Hosting online

It gives you a pretty good guide, and it only seems to be a day or two behing G for indexing.

It's seems to be commmon knowledge that google only shows a small percentage of the backlinks it recognizes.

To the OP: It usually takes a few weeks before yahoo starts to recognize backlinks so hang in there.

Ok I understand that I may not see backlinks in Google but I'll still get credit for them. But when I checked my links at alltheweb[dot]com link: www[dot]mydomain[dot]com, I saw different results for 'mydomain[dot]com' as opposed to 'www[dot]mydomain[dot]com' should I assume that in order to get the greatest seo effects from my linking I should stick to one domain format in my links:confused:?
Thanks for the answers, just trying to make sense of it all.

        Here's another question.

If it takes Yahoo up to a few weeks to recognize backlinks, what about these free SEO tools online that also have backlink checkers? Do your links have to be recognized by a major search engine before these checkers see them? Another words, do these checkers feed off of the search engine results (coded that way) ??

Reason why I ask is that I have been doing Angela's backlinks and 9 out of 10 have not shown up yet, even after 2+ months.

Yes, 99% of these tools piggyback off search engines.

Yes, you need the pages that host your link to be cached. One good tip is to submit these pages to one or two social bookmarking sites, or post them on one of your less important sites that gets crawled often. This means you wont be waiting weeks or months for them to get indexed.

Secondly... Google knows about all your links......

and thirdly.... to find out exactly how many links Google knows about, use the following... and note that the URL is in quotes!!

    link: "www.yoursite.com"

Bear in mind that if your site is showing in Google ads content network, some of them maybe your ads.

    Hope that helps.

Google definitely takes its time with acknowleging backlinks, so you would want to make sure that the pages that host your link are being cached. A really good method is to submit your pages to one or two social bookmarking sites at a time, or post them on one of your frequently visited less targeted sites. This can definitely speed up the indexing procedure! You can always check with Google by searching under 'link: "www.mywebpage.com"' to see how it registers with Google at present! Hope this helps.

I had heard some rumors about a slowly-developing slap that is going on right now, but I don't know what it involves. Since people are starting to learn about the power of backlinks for SEO purposes, would it not be natural for Google to perform a slap to reverse the trend back towards organic indexing to neutralize the smart people? What do you think?
This is my concern as well - I was wondering exactly the same thing. However, as they say - "make hay while the sun shines", or "build links while serps give you credit"
