Want to create a info blog for my city?

Hey everybody, I am thinking of creating a site that will be based on my city. It will consist of all the info regarding my city like history, market places, courier services, car rental, five star properties, restaurants etc.

I plan to create an information hub and once I start getting some traffic I will monetize it by meeting local business owners and asking them for advertisement opportunities.

What do you think about the idea? And what suggestions do you have to make this project even more successful.

It would be even better if someone can jump in who has already done something similar to this model.

  • Anoop,

It's a great idea. Please go ahead and do it since any random Indian website I see is worse than pathetic. Banners flashing at you, crappiest content on earth, and slowest sites to load ever. In fact, there seem to be more Google Ads on these sites than the actual content.

I'll be happy if you can set-up a site for your city, and then another site for my city too

Sure. I think it's a brilliant idea.. Nevertheless, don't expect to see results overnight. your kind of marketing is a long term plan.. Provide quality information and soon (I believe) you will start to drive countless of traffic to your website .

BTW, How much time do you think it would take for a site like this to get around 200-500 visitors/day (organic). I understand there is no formula, I am just asking based on your experience.

    • That depends on how you market your website.

If you are aggressive and push the metal to the floor by using SEO, PPC, media buying, etc -- 6 months.

Otherwise, 1 year. Some websites take longer. Good for you that you really don't have competition that's too strong.

I would test the waters before jumping into something like this. Dealing with local business owners can be tedious, and may not worth all the time, energy, money you'd invest in this.

If you found a neat domain name already, get it and create a basic site as beta test. Then create some fascinating presentations, brochures, etc. Meet up with those business people and tell them about your upcoming project. Create some hype if you can. They may even give you lots of ideas.

You need an extremely careful planning.

I think this is a great idea.

I love reading about places that have a personal touch as the person who is writing it has actually been there and can advise best places to go etc.

I find it very appealing and wish you luck!

bigger ideas will gain more result.. my suggestion, try to focus on one subject, like a hotel reviews or restaurant, rather than put all information together on one site.
