Kindle publishers: Don't overlook audiobooks!

I just received my first payment for the audiobook versions of five paperback books that are available through Audible.com and Amazon.com, starting late last fall. In numbers of sales, I am selling as many or more of the audiobook versions than the Kindle versions! This surprised me.

Narrated (by me), these audiobooks are each about two hours in length. I am not sure you can get away with something much shorter than that, but those who are producing full-length paperbacks or ebooks in fiction or nonfiction should definitely take the time to create an audiobook version too - especially if you have a good voice and don't have to hire a reader or do a lot of audio editing.

    Great post! What is the process for submitting an audio book to Audible / Amazon? I recently published a new book to the Kindle store and I am selling the audio book on my own website too. I should probably drop it into Audible/Amazon in audio format too.

    My good sense tells me there would be copyright issues
    to deal with but I really don't know anything about this niche.

      Yes, these are audio version of five books I wrote.

      You are absolutely correct that it would be copyright infringement to make audio versions of other people's books without their explicit permission.

    I was thinking about this just the other day.

    Of course, I would need to hire out the voice work, because I don't think everyone would fancy my Okie accent.

      Marcia very clearly stated that she is creating audio versions of her own publications.

      Excellent tip Marcia, I was aware of this but had no idea that it was such a lucrative market.

        I heard about and was checking out Audiobook Creation Exchange (ACX)
        I poked around their site and it doesn't look like they offer only distribution. They are interested in getting your business for the whole production AND distribution process. Ditto for Professionally Recorded Audio Books.

        So I would not add them to my list of audiobook distribution helpers.

        However, they may meet your needs.
