    Hi Tony,

The easiest way to format for Kindle is to write your book in MS Word. If you have images, use .jpg so that you can resize easily when you conver to Kindle book. Don't use MS Word Art Graphics. I've done that before and Amazon rejected it because customers complained.

I believe it can be tricky, and time-consuming, but Pianorosa is more qualified than I am in this area.

Dennis Becker has developed an app that will do it for you (Kinstant Formatter), which I have purchased, but haven't used yet.

I think it still sells in the WSO section.. that is not where I purchased it, but I will see if I can dig up a link.

    EDIT:

I've published a number of Kindle books, and I've never had an issue.

Then again I always use Microsoft Word, and I suppose if I was using Notepad or something it'd be more difficult...

But why in the WORLD would you write in Notepad? At least get Open Office.

I´m formatting my first kindle ebook now. So far so good.

I am using komposer, and following Steven Lewis´s kindle book. It is a lil bit time consuming, more or less like editing a web page (it is a web page).

I tried the easy route before and saved as htm my word file. The code is extremely dirty. What is good is that it gave me a folder with all the images. Now I can use them.

I believe that if the ebook is only text, any method will work. But for stuff with heavy formatting like mine, you have to get the hands dirty to have a nice result.

Hi, I appreciate the comments here. I have a book done, and it is on word, but when I look at the requirements on kindle formatting it talks about indentations, etc. Do you put in your indentations when doing it on word or leave that to Amazon? thanks for any replies as this is confusing.pj

I have a PLR kindle formatting guide with template.

If you want a copy, shoot me a PM and I will ship it over.

It is kind of a hassle, but not too bad.

While the process can have a few steps, the hardest part for me has been resisting the urge to put in fancy formatting.

I use Open Office Writer and save the final document as a web page. The code is much cleaner than you get with Word.

There is software called Kindle Writer that does what is says on the tin. Do a search on Google for Kindle Writer and download the 30 day trial. What have you got to lose?

Using the refference tab to make the table of contents, had an error when I tried it. Anyone have a step by step process that you can show me how to make a TOC?

I may be imaging it but I thought at one point Amazon had a format conversion tool. I used it for a client thing a few years ago.

I also have done what marine0302 did, I used someone on fiverr and he did a great job for 5.00. I just uploaded it and it was done. I also got the cover done by someone on fiverr as well.

Be careful with who you choose on Fiverr. I know someone who used a Fiverr guy and the guy stole his book and started selling it everywhere.

I struggled with this for a long time myself and literally banged my head against the wall for weeks. I finally figured out how to do it easily using an open source (free) program called Calibre.

All I do is save as HTML (or filtered HTML depending on your version of Word), open in Calibre, input my metadata (cover, author, etc), input TOC settings and hit convert.
