Advertisments or Subscriptions???

Hi All,

I'm about to embark on a new website business. It will be in the music sector and will offer quite a unique twist on marketing amateur music.

I am clear on the concept of the site but am not an internet marketer. I'd love some opinion as to the best way to monetize my site.

Initially I thought I'd start on day 1 of business with a 'freemium' subscription model (i.e people get limited benefits from a free account and more benefits from upgrading to paid membership) which I still am leaning towards but then I've read a couple of articles that say to start off with a totally free service and monetize using ads until there is a large enough customer base to start charging. Now I am a little confused as I see the pro's and con's to both.

Which approach would you advise (if either)?

Many thanks in advance!

You can start the pricing plan straight away. The main problem is to drive traffic to it.

Oh I forgot to mention that my site will not be providing content. This will be done by users so I think I'm going to need a good few users before it looks like a site worth signing up for. I know I wouldn't sign up to a site where it was obvious there was only a handful of members.
