Hosting downtime - lost sales

Does anyone else here have a method to track downtime on your hosting provider?

I was curious so I installed a demo of a downtime tracking program (it was so great I later purchased it - Simon for the mac). I was shocked to find one of my sites had downtime of 14%. This is with a provider that "guarantees" 99.9% uptime (like many others I am sure). I know I can get a $5 refund, but that is nothing compared to lost sales.

Has anyone else tracked their downtime, and what have you done about it?

I wouldn't trust a free trial to tell me downtime - as the purpose is to upsell you to a paid trial.

Same as the "free virus checkers" that come back with all sorts of "problems" that you can learn about "just by upgrading".

Please do not 'release balloons' for celebrations. The balloons and trailing ribbons entangle birds and kill wildlife and livestock that think the balloons are food.
