Subdomain VS Subfolder

Hi, i'm a bit confused about subdomain and subfolder. Subdomain will look like: ww.subdomain.example.com while subfolder will look like ww.example.com/subfolder. If i have a subfolder but i google for ww.subdomain.example.com, will it appear? How to create subfolder? What is the difference between these two. Please explain, i'm confused.

    Hi,

Search engines will view a subdomain as a mostly separate domain, so if you would like to create separate content, then this is the way to go. If you are building a large site that you would like to benefit from the content as a whole, then use subfolders.

Creating a subfolder is as simple as uploading a folder to your root directory.

The "www" portion of any url is in fact a subdomain. Therefore, you will NEVER see www.subdomain.example.com. You will see subdomain.example.com.

A subdomain is an actual part of the URL.

A sub folder is simply a folder or directory you place on your hosting account, under your domain name.

To create a folder, you simply access your hosting space through FTP or through your cpanel, and create a folder. That's all there is to that. Just like you'd create a folder on your computer in Windows.

Sub-domains are effectively separate websites. You need to upload them separately and so on. Folders are part of the main domain.

As far as Google is concerned, Google indexes individual pages, not really sites, so there should not be any difference.

Personally, I've been debating the advantage of one over the over and I haven't come up with a good answer for myself. Anyone else have any thoughts?

It depends how you got about making the subdomain.

Normally if you make a subfolder then it won't show as a subdomain, but this isn't always the case the other way round.

A subdomain is also treated by google as a completely new site. That means that you'll have to SEO it all over again (although this isn't 100% true. Google does have some leverage on subdomains).

Subfolders however are treated as the same as the main index.

So example.com/example-folder/ and example.com/example-folder-2/ are treated as being on the same site (example.com)

However, subdomain.example.com and subdomain2.example.com are treated as different websites.

Here's a quick example of my site.
ipaidnothing.co.uk is my main domain, but then I have a sub-folder called 'freeipadtoday.co.uk'. This sub-folder can either be accessed by going to freeipadtoday.co.uk, or by going to ipaidnothing.co.uk/freeipadtoday.co.uk

    But not accessed through freeipadtoday.co.uk.ipaidnothing.co.uk

It's really confusing, but hopefully this helps

Ok. To make some clarification. The main domain is example.com and then the sub-folder that i named is "yourexample", i will get access to it by google for yourexample.com? Can i use different themes for both of this main domain and sub-folder? Thanks.

Not sure that's always the case. There are enough instances where the above is true, but it is also about conditioning.

Which one among the two is more professional?

      Google Maps
      http://www.google.com/adsense

I don't know really... I am conditioned to use those in the way mentioned above.

No one jumped in to total DNS control so you can have sub.sub.domain.com, which would allow for www.sub.domain.com.
You need to have total DNS control to set them up this way. A lot of the gaming sites use them. If you watch the status bar you will see something like ak.fb.domain.com loading stuff to you.

I would use a subdomain, just for tracking purposes. For quick checking I like AWStats, and subs get their own listing.

Using a subdomain will create separate site and Page Rank for main domain and subdomain will be different.

But in case of subfolder the Page Rank will be same.

I make my main site is in english language.
Which is BDBLOGGERZ » An Information Technology Blog.
    And made a localized Bengali Language site in subfolder বিডিব্লগারজ» একটি তথ্য ও প্রযুক্তি বিষয়ক ব্লগ.

I get hits from both sites which boost my alexa rank and page rank.

I vote for subfolder instead of subdomain.
