Growing up in inner city Los Angeles--I met a lot of street hustlers, pimps, drug dealers, and thief's... The one thing that they all have in common is that they are all scammers. And, none of them make any real money... Now... I don't knock what they do or what anyone does to get by in life--I mean, none of us really asked to be born. But... please understand that doing things the "wrong" way, will not better your life or make you more money in the long haul. You can lie, cheat, and steal all you want--but eventually the bull**** will catch up with you--unless you fall into the 1% of wrongdoers that fly under the radar and get away with it. Consequences for wrongdoing can range from a "slap on the wrist" to the death penalty... or... your domain being banned to an FTC investigation... it's just not worth it. You will waste more time and money trying to create perfect schemes than you would if you just did things the right way. Scamming requires so much work... Not only do you have to craft a good scam... you also have to defend the scam if you get caught, which can be very difficult. The straight and narrow way is much more effective, profitable, and it requires less work. Marc |

This especially pertains well to a section of my industry that promises "instant results overnight". What people aren't being told is that the "instant results" takes far more work than just sticking it out and doing things the right way. Even though sticking it out and doing things the right way still takes time, overall it's a heck of a lot less time than having to cover your tracks and redo everything when you get caught. Thanks for posting this. - Kristine

Hi Marc, You are right in one respect. If the scammers put the same effort and energy into a legitimate business or venture they could actually do well for themselves. However, I doubt there taking any notice of your post. See below for proof... Quote:

Marc, You might be preaching to the wrong crowd - but then, maybe not. Scammers are everywhere. Consider this. While it might take a lot of work to come up with a workable scam, once you find one that works, you can make a real bundle long before you get caught. That's what they rely on. Look at the Nigerian letters scam and beneficiary letters floating around. "... dear kind sir, Mr. Fred Scambutt sadly passed away and we've learned the he has named you his beneficiary... All we need is for you take accept the $10,000,000 into your American bank account, but you must keep this strictly confidential...." With just one successful transaction, they could be up $10 million bucks. On a much smaller scale, if a scammer figures out a way to steal your product and resell it as his/her own... again, little work for lots of money - before they get caught. Remember too, that like attracts... by hooking up with others with the same mindset, they can magnify their efforts and make a killing, then split the money amongst themselves. Once their scam is revealed, they move on to another one, constantly burning their bridges to make it difficult for the authorities to track them. My belief is that these people do not have any skills or just don't want to work long hours for little money. They've decided their way will make them rich much faster. I'm sure there probably is some element of excitement about the whole process that makes scamming somewhat addictive. Sylvia |

I often wonder about the posts I see attacking the op as to if the poster is actually trying to contribute to the forum or just get his sig file seen. Good post Marc and maybe someone will take your words to heart and give honest IM a shot.

And concerning statistics, all you need to know is that the law of averages is alive and well. Scammers can think that they are safe but if they continue to scam one day they will get caught and it could very well make up for all the times they got away with it. My 2, Jim

Scammers can't hack it in the real world, because they don't have any ethics, thats why they are comfortable doing what they do. But think of this, they were not born scammers .... so at sometime they became scammers. I believe strongly that if someone gets a taste for something they can change their thinking significantly. People were not born drug addicts, but when they get the high, they get mental persuasion along with the beginnings of a physical addiction ... but its the mental persuasion that keeps them taking until the physical addiction takes over. Same is true with the effect having a whole lot of cash can do to you ... at first you might not do anything to get it, but getting a taste for it can start to change your values about how you got it. Obviously that's not an excuse simply an observation, that some people have tried things that we not perhaps morally right when it comes to earning money, and the feelings they got when they had the money stops or changes the way their conscience works. And then there are those who just display no sign of morality or conscience whatsoever ... scambags Interesting post. |

Because scamming is a variation of lying--and I've lied many times in my life... One thing I've learned from it--is that when caught in a lie... it's very difficult to stop--and so much work is required to keep the lie going... it's not worth the time. I also learned that no matter how elaborate or how "air tight" one might think their lie is... there will always be a leak in the story--and if you can't out wit your accusers... they will easily exploit you. That's how I know! Have you ever lied before John? |

Hi, I agree with Billyboy, some scammers are plain evil, but surely a lot of blackhat techniques are used by people here, I mean seo by its very nature is blackhat. It seems people are forgetting that business is cut throat, the nice guy will rarely come out on top, if you have strong ethics and a high moral code, surely the last place you would be is in IM? I don't understand why anyone would want to scam anybody. I mean yeah it's a quick buck but what do you gain out of that in the end? Look at Madolph(probably mispelled).... all scammers eventually get caught. You ruin your reputation which is a HUGE issue. If the internet gets to know you as a scammer, you are done for! -Earl |
