Any Of You Marketers Know About Fraud? Someone stole my personal information..

I'm posting this here because now I'm wondering if its possible that my marketing caused this. I have NOT had any issues with ID theft/fraud my whole life.

Its just odd how after my first few months of doing affiliate promotions that this happened.

The story right now is this -

Went to my bank today to cash a check, found out my account was locked. I ask the teller wtf is going on and he tells me I have "2 inquiries" on accounts opened in a state I've NEVER BEEN TO in my life. They were both opened in colorado under my social security.

We confirmed my social like 10 times and the teller kept saying "yep, someone tried to open up 2 accounts using your social in colorado".

Even gave me the guys name which I'm about to do a search on right now. His name is "Eduardo Gomes", I just got home and wanted to see what you guys think I need to do.

So far no money has been taken or put into either one of these accounts, but the accounts were just opened 3 days ago.

I IMMEDIATELY called lifelock, paid $300, and now they are running an investigation and alerted authorities in colorado plus the bank.

I'm at my house now waiting for lifelock to call... and man I'm just nervous as hell. Say this guy tries to run these accounts up and mess with my credit, has anyone here used lifelock?

Are they good at actually handling this sort of thing? Should I contact the police? Lifelock said they would handle it, I've never used this place before, and could really use some advice. I NEVER use my credit card or paypal or anything online except for CPA. Can I basically assume thats what caused this?

What do you guys think?
Thanks! - Red

    Man! That's pretty shocking.

Never used lifelock before so cannot really comment on the situation - but will most definitely be keeping a tab on the replies in this thread. Hope everything works out well with you.

    • Hi Redshifted,

I am so sorry to hear (read) what you've just written. I feel for you.

Therefore, check out Suze Orman's site for tips on Identity Theft and what you need to do.

If you don't know Suze Orma; well, she's a Financial Guru who gives financial advice on MSNBC Saturday evenings (she Lives in New York City, I believe). She's also been on Oprah Winfrey's show many times giving financial advice. This woman is highly knowledgeable and respected.

On her site she provides a lot of valuable resources that includes a letter of dispute to send to banks, as well as other forms to fill out and sage advice on what to do.

      Here's her site:

      Identity Theft

      Hope this helped.

      Good luck to you,

      JMB

P.S. I remember on one of shows she talked about a service that you can purchase to avoid identify theft. However, I can't remember if it was Lifelock or not. Sorry.

I think you need to edit your post and remove the guy's name unless you want to help him get away with something and also in the event there is a serious misunderstaning you're not aware of.

I would contact all credit bureaus if you haven't but getting lifelock was a good decision. I hope you get though this alright.

Besides, it is against forum rules to name names for the above stated reasons.

With how many people here publicly promote themselves in their online marketing campaigns, hopefully someone can offer up some solid advice for you.

Sorry to hear about this. Good thing you caught it quickly.

Hiring Lifelock is like hiring a bank robber to secure a bank.

Identity theft should be reported to the police. It is a criminal offense.
