i think it's as a good place as any to attempt to turn a profit. there will always be competition (unless you're lucky or innovative). might want to figure out a way to socially market your site, because not only will you have to compete with big sites like amazon, but also pet companies (like pet co and petsmart).

I have two cats and since cats are easily bored, cat owners usually look for new toys for them. I have a dog niche that steadily brings me in income. So to answer your question, YES! People love their pets and some treat them like royalty and will buy anything they think their cat will love. I say, don't question, it just keeping adding your pages and getting each page/post ranked. I think eventually you will do quite well.

Tell me about it. I NEVER thought I'd have a cat but ended up bringing in a really friendly stray. I've got what seems to be a closet full of cat toys. I even went as far as building him a house / maze out of cardboard boxes.

Im just building a autority type site with fun topics and some product keywords. I already have 35 pages so im gonna keep going! I guess I just need to target the expensive products like the litter robot, nice cat scratching post, automatic feeders etc.

Top Amazon affiliates typically do build lists in such highly competitive niches, especially for promoting incrementally higher end products.

You are not allowed to have Amazon affiliate links in your email promotions, but it is perfectly acceptable and considered best practices to promote your presell/review websites by email and other online/offline media.

True, but some people prefer Amazon since they make the process a LOT easier and tend to convert at a much higher rate. (I've done both, so I have some personal experience.)

My personal preference is Amazon.

Remember here that 'Cats' is not a niche- it's a very broad market.

When starting up a site, try and drill down as much as you can. I've heard before and personally like the metaphor of refining a huge lump of raw material (the broad starting point) into a finely polished gem (the profitable target niche). Use a tool such as Market Samurai, or free options such as Google's Keyword Tool to discover well searched sub-niches within your chosen area of passion/expertise. When starting out, it's always best to start small, but dream big.

I'm not suggesting you haven't already done this, but it may be a useful reminder for anyone else reading the thread

I see people spending massive amounts of money on cat things at cat shows, and I often get photos emailed to me from my kitten buyers, showing their new additions with all their toys, furniture, accessories etc
I have a small Amazon Astore on my Ragdoll Cat site, I get a few sales now and then, but my site is chiefly for promotion of my cats.

Also guys if I build a big cat authority site I can basically break this down into smaller niches right? I mean for instance I target 10 keywords in the " cat clicker training" niche etc.

I think that's the good thing about making a large content site. I can keep going and going. I can make as many pages as I want and target as many sub niches in the big niche as I want. Right?

Yeah, that's the theory, but it seldom works out that way in reality. I'm sure there are exceptions, but all things being equal, you will make more selling the stuff yourself than you will as an Amazon affiliate, and you can do it with half the traffic. And then the customers are YOURS, not Amazon's, which means the next time they need something, they're likely to come to you, not Amazon. You also don't have to worry about getting kicked out of Amazon's affiliate program if your state decides to tax affiliate sales. You also don't have to worry about getting kicked out of Google or getting your rankings reduced for being an affiliate site.

If you want to make more money, build an e-commerce site. If you want to make less money for the same(if not more) work, be an Amazon affiliate.

also guys I figure if I keep writing content in such a big niche and targeting long tail keywords im bound to start getting traffic for some long tail keyword variations. Then I just send them to amazon. Amazon converts itself

Yes, the cat niche is a profitable niche, any niche you choose is profitable. All you have to do is focus on that niche and break it down to sub niches. There is many things you can do with niches once you break them down into tiny bits. Concentrate on getting that list build and on providing valuable cat content lol.

I'm sure there is a viable market for this cat niche. What I'd suggest is:

1) Keyword research (very narrow, targeted sub-niche keyword)

2) Google adwords check (use spyfu.com - and check out if there are bids on it)

3) Implement.

The cat niche is great and a 35 page site sounds like a solid approach. Make sure your targeting buying keyword phrases though. Make sure you build a list in that niche as well. Always be list building

Spending on pets was one of the few things to increase during the global financial crisis, and total spending was over $50 billion last year. Cat niche should be profitable, but try not to go ad-heavy on the site initially. It's always best to give an impression of sincere personal interest in any niche at first, even if you have little or none and your main goal is to make money from the site.

Same technique as email marketing. Make a good impression and build a selfless image and then you can start making bank later. Give away some free stuff on your site also...get those emails.

People do spend money on their pets, specially cats, so I strongly believe it is a good niche to get into.

The only condition is that you should be a cat lover, and have a lot of knowledge about felines. That is the only way you'll be able to produce excellent quality content that will attract readers to your site; since there are a lot of cat sites out there.

Amazon has some great products to promote in the cat niche, so you should be okay. Good luck
