Accessing NEW Lists - Dangers in this approach ?

Hi Guys,

I have a number of new info products coming online soon. A series of ebooks and a couple of membership (subscription) sites.

They are a B2B focus.

Rather than just put these sites up and wait for traffic, or rely purely on driving traffic with PPC, I want to proactively market the products. (And yes, I'll put them on clickbank)

I already have a couple of relevant lists, one of 10,000 and one of 5,000, but I need to reach a much larger / broader audience. Like 100,000 to start with. Then test and measure and hit another 100,000, and another, and another.

I do not really want to buy or rent a list. Why? Two reasons. (1) Just emailing people I don't know 'out of the blue' is a bit spammy. (2) It probably violates Anti Spam legislation anyway and (3) Ok, there's three. It will screw up my autorepsonder email system. Because if I get above a certain % of spam complaints, I lose my software licence.

So Plan B!

I get someone else to send an email on my behalf, and let them deal with the Spam complaints! Well, that's part of the story at least.

But it's also way more effective for a 3rd party to be sending the email, when I have no relationship with the list. In effect the 3rd party is 'endorsing' me and my product. i.e. Dear Joe, I came across this amazing offer from Harry and thought you would love it etc etc.

Not quite affiliate marketing, but I had more in mind that I would approach a large 'list broker' and get them to send the email to an agreed list.

So I guess my questions are:

1) What are the risks in adopting this strategy?
2) Can you suggest any list owners / brokers that I could approach?
3) What kind of costs shouold I be paying per 10,000 emails sent?

Please don't respond telling me you have a list of 5 million and you'll send the email for $500 to the whole list! I am after quality here not quantity. And this is B2B not mass market, so we need to develop the list profile carefully.

I'll be targetting US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK, Singapore, Hong Kong, and maybe a couple of other countries.

Any thoughts or advice most appreciated.

I recall a site offering 1 Billion so called "opt in" email addresses, interested?

Conforming to the Can-Spam regulations if operating in the U.S. should be the biggest issue. It's certainly more expensive to have someone else mail to their opt in lists on your behalf, but that may just be the cost of doing business. I don't know if there is any distinction in contacting businesses vs private parties as there is for telemarketers.

Are you familiar with the mecca of demographically targeted postal/email and phone lists for rent: lists.NextMark.com

Of course if you planning to use affiliates, then you can let them do the advance mailing for you after you get out the word with JV announcements at sites like jvnotifypro.com
