Mobile Apps & Websites..

I've noticed that more and more people go to websites through their smartphone and stop using web browsers all together. I suspect that this is only going to happen more and faster.

At one point there might not be much to do in the world of web design and it might move more into mobile design..

I would love to hear everyone's thoughts on this

I always see this is a good trend. Mobile web design is still a design task. There is still so many good design practice to implement with it. It is also a very good challenge to take to make the mobile web usable and provide good user experience.

However I still believe the main website still play an important role as people still using desktop to work and having fun.

The market is definately headed towards mobile devices, and I agree that you will still need a 'desktop' site, but I would caution you against concentrating solely on apps unless you're pitching at big businesses with a huge following.

For the average business an app will be a waste of time and effort, I don't think users will want to scroll through hunderds of apps stored on their phone to find your one unless you're offering something really special and of real use and value, also i read somewhere (sorry, can't remember where) that the average user will install an app and pretty much delete it after one look.

My advice is to make mobile websites to compliment the desktop site, provide a good experience for the visitor and in the end you'll have accomplished what you and your client wants, ie more exposure and leads/sales.

After all if the site is good and useful, the visitor will bookmark it and in effect it will serve the same purpose as an app.

      All the best

Although mobiles are popular and will continue to get more and more popular over the next few years, I don't think regular websites will be outdated for a while yet. We use mobiles when out on the move but I still think a lot of people prefer to surf the web using larger devices when at home, whether it be a tablet, laptop, or even web tv.

I don't think this will change. There are always going to be things you need a regular PC for and so long as people still have regular PC's they will keep using them for web surfing.

The way forward is HTML5 whereby the content will automatically be formatted for the type of device accessing it.

Mobile websites are becoming increasingly popular because, as you have rightly stated, people are using their smartphones more and more.

I know people who are making large sums of money by simply designing websites optimized for mobile use. More and more businesses are looking towards improving access for smartphone users.

However, saying that they will make regular websites obsolete would be pushing it. It's not like phones are replacing personal computers, it's just that they are growing up alongside them.

It is predicted that mobile browsing will take over desktops by 2014. All business owners are now realising this shift to hand-held devices - iphones, androids, blackberrys, ipad etc. Many companies now offer Responsive Web Design in response to the need for web pages to resize correctly in any browser from 25" to 320 pixels. Companies that ignore this new shift will eventually lose out to competitors who have set up mobile-friendly sites. Have you ever looked at a fixed width website on your iphone / android? <Having to scroll horizontally is a killer>. Potential customers will avoid like the plague!
There is also a new demand for Mobile Apps which are tailor made & touch enabled scaled down versions of a full site, maybe offering discount tickets, promotions, GPS directions, updated menus, quizes and other means to get business through the door.
I am already embracing these new trends - learning HTML5, CSS3, Jquery and using responsive frameworks. I am also looking at Sencha Touch 2.

I think the future is in the intuitive responsive/hybrid style themes - if you are using something like wordpress that is.

You may very well see a new coding evolve out of html as well (I feel like Nostradamus all the sudden lol).

This very well could also be considered a shift to Web 3.0 I think as the changes going on are huge.

There are changes in web design - as well as some I think that may be implemented in organization of a site as well. Smaller screens are not meant for the same consumption as large screens.

People traveling do so with a mobile device now that does more and even the lap tops are becoming too much to travel with.

Offering WiFi is becoming a standard for most places (ie car dealerships, restaurants, and places where you may experience some wait time.)

I think you'll see a boom in the app business when it becomes easier and less expensive to create your own apps.

Hi Jill, I agree with much of what you say and I think we can look forward to some truly awesome advances in the near future, but I have to disagree about apps, for sure they can do wonders for big business but I just don't see there being a boom for a small mom & pop type business apps. Most small businesses just don't have the customer base to warrent one or the basic need for one unless...

My prediction for apps is in the area of local directories, where each listing will be an app in itself but under the umbrella of one big directory app. Mix in a healthy dollop of Proximity Awareness & Augmented reality and I think its gotta be a winner. My reasons are simple, no one wants their phone cluttered with 100's of individual apps with limited use that they only might use occassionally.

The big screens and 4g (or 3G) connectivity have made this possible. If somebody told that three years ago, I would have never believed it.
