cashing dollar cheques in UK?

Any UK based warrior have a view of the cheapest bank to cash an Amazon.com dollar cheque?
(I'm with HSBC but they want £25 a cheque!)

I've tried Auctionpix but the exchange rate is such that for reasonably sized cheques it would actually cost more than HSBC

I'm with Natwest and I can't remember exactly how much it was, but it was a lot less than that.

they say it can take up to 6 weeks but if they know you in the branch then they can fast track it so it clears in a few days

Santander - £10, sounds best so far. Anyone beat that? Whamsoft - is this a flat fee irrespective of size of cheque?

These are cheques for kindle book sales from Amazon.com.....can't see any other option apart from dollar cheques. They don't currently give me the option to do electronic transfer which is what I would prefer.

I also use Santander. £10 fixed fee and about 5/6 days to clear.

But I've just been slightly surprised by this thread, as it seems that a few people have very different experiences of Santander from my own: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...-you-bank.html

        Alexa,

I also noticed the Santander comments on the other thread. Personally I've only had a few minor issues with them and this was when it was run as Abbey National.

I'd have to say I'm quite happy with the service.

I get the impression that banks charge different amounts according to what they think they can get away with!

I bank with NatWest and they charge me £8 per transaction - a transaction can be any amount of cheques so I find it best to save them up until I have a pile of them.

I was asked to sign a mandate form when I first started depositing dollar cheques and that allows the bank to clear the funds to my account in the same time as a regular UK cheque (the form gives them the right to reclaim the money if the cheques bounce).

Mind you - cheques are a rarity these days as most of my income is now either by PayPal or arrives by direct bank transfer.

      Hi,

As far as I know it's a standard fee for all foreign currency cheques.

And yes I've just doubled checked my Amazon.com affiliate account and direct deposit is not available to international users. Amazon.co.uk associate accounts due have the direct deposit option but it doesn't help in this case as the cheques would be in sterling and processed free of charge by most banks.

That's what I was thinking - surely this has to be the best option? I haven't actually set foot in a bank, cashed a check, or even written a check for years..

I do all my banking through ING Direct - love 'em.

Also use Santander, though they frequently cock things up with cheques going astray etc.
