Traffic Has Slowed Down

Have you guys noticed over the last few months a dip in the amount of traffic you are getting and a decrease in sales. I have sites that were getting 500 -1200 visitors a day, now I am getting around 300 -500 to the same sites. I post new fresh content at least 2 -3 times a week to these sites, but the traffic has really slowed down.

It seems like folks are holding on to their pocket books and are just surfing the net and not buying. My sales have really dropped over the last few months. I am still getting opt-ins.

Are you guys seeing the same types of drops in your visitor traffic and sales?

So are you actually seeing less traffic? Or just less sales?

Either way you have to consider the current economic climate, hardly anyone is buying right now. What sorts of products are you promoting/selling?

I think it would depend on the products or services you're offering. As Michael here has mentioned, you should look at the economic climate because not a lot of people are willing to buy as of the moment. Have you tried checking your competitors if they changed something in their strategy, or something? Or maybe check some of the reviews that people have made for you.

You need to work out what exactly is going on - is the fall in traffic, or just in sales, or in both? Do you know where your traffic is coming from? Look at Google analytics if you are set up for it, or awstats in your cpanel & work out why your traffic has dropped. Maybe you are in a niche where the number of searches has fallen (so less demand) or maybe you were ranking for a keyword but your ranking has now fallen.

Falling traffic (or sales) can be for lots of different reasons - you need to know why to be able to do anything about it.

I'm not sure it's entirely true to say people aren't buying at the moment. I have a friend who is in the health niche, he hasn't done anything to promote his website in about 2 months, and he's still taking in $300 - $400 per week.

His traffic only comes from YouTube.

If you're selling a good quality product, which is genuinely solving a problem to your customers, you will always make sales.

I studied economics at uni and in fact, at times, in recessions, people spend MORE of their disposable income on products / services, to give them a boost amongst all the doom and gloom. Furthermore, there's such a thing as a 'Giffen Good' - i.e., if there's a product or service that someone really wants, due to their financial restrictions, they'll forego, say two weeks of their usual nights out with their pals, to pay for the thing they place higher value on.

Keep at it. If you're selling a good quality product, you'll still sell it, assuming your marketing is right.

Reduction in traffic is unlikely to be anything to do with peoples buying patterns. At least not 50% traffic reduction.

I'm assuming you are referring to organic search traffic.

Most likely you will have lost some ranking for one or more keywords.
    Do you track keyword ranking?

If you have any dramatic search result position changes then you need to look at why.

    Lost/lost value backlinks?
Were you using any of recently hit blog networks?
Panda (sitewide) penalties for poor content?

You need to analyze your sites to find out what has actually happened

Oil goes above $100 a barrel, the world goes into recession. I think it's 2008 all over again.

I only have a few Amazon monetised pages (mainly HubPages) but I've noticed people just aren't buying (CTR is still much the same). And those who do just buy a single item.

This sounds like a classic case of Google penalities.

    Are you buying any links?

If you've paid for any Fiverr gigs giving you links you may find you're being penalised.

If you log in to your google webmaster account and see what links they are showing and if any of them come from bought sources that will give you an indication. Alternatively just submit a 'reconsideration request'. If there are penalties being applied then their reply will tell you that your site still has whatever the problem is and at least you'll have an idea what to do about it - or they'll say it's fine and you'll know that.

I don't think I am getting penalized from Google because my site is still on the first page of Google out of 5.7 million pages. I have a good keyword and I am still getting folks to sign up for my opt-in.

Someone mention that maybe I need to reinvent myself. I have done that too and also rewrote my follow up emails. I am sure what I am going through with these two sites is just a phase and things will turn around soon.

      Fair enough.

It's just that I have clients who came to me because their traffic went down and although they have many number 1 positions - their most competitive terms have been Google slapped and their traffic has reduced because of those terms being penalised.

When google slap you - they don't slap your entire site, you can still have top rankings for some terms.

A slow down in traffic can really be attributed to a number of things. Posting fresh content to a blog can really help but it takes more than that. Google is constantly updating their algorithm which means that Panda wasn't a one time thing.

One of the things they're refining is relevancy. Not only should your content be fresh but it should also be highly relevant to your niche and keywords.

Another issue they're looking at is one of the most important for the coming months and years. Quality. Posting fresh content is always a good practice but you need to make sure that this content is of the highest quality as well. Unfortunately for many people, there is no way to fool the system when it comes to quality.

Google has been using real people to determine the ultimate quality of a site. There may be a few ways to fool bots, spiders and the overall algorithm but there is no way to fool the real people reviewing your site.

You also need to focus on the freshness, quality and relevancy of the content on static pages as well.

The desire for a certain product can also change depending on the season. Products about losing weight, for example, are likely to be more popular during spring when people are trying to lose weight before summer.

It's a lot to keep track of and it can be hard to cover everything. If I can be of any further help please feel free to PM me.
