If you were hosting a mastermind, how would you do it?

Hi Warriors,

I've taken on the responsibility of hosting a mastermind group in the central Florida area (specifically Clermont). I've done this to make sure it happens. I've never been in a mastermind group much less hosted one, so I am hoping there might be some warriors who might be able to offer some assistance.
I'm partnering with someone I met through meetup.com who hosts a mastermind group earlier in the week and at an earlier time of day (I work when hers happens). She has had some people express interest in a later time of day mastermind, which is where mine comes in. I will have those folks show up, but I'd also like to meet some fellow warriors. I've posted a mastermind group thread in the appropriate forum, but I wanted to post here for your help.

What would you do if you were hosting a mastermind group?

Do you conduct it formally as a meeting, or informally as a conversation?

How long should it run?

How often should we meet? Right now I'm thinking first and third Friday is a good time frame.

Any thoughts you have are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Jim,

Personally I'd avoid Friday's - bad night for anything because people go away for the weekend and go out after a week at work. I'd suggest a Thursday would be better and the 1st and 3rd each month would work well.

You need to think out a structure and determine what works best. My suggestion would be a formal structure with it lasting around 60-90 minutes or so. I'd have a presentation of some sort from a member or two designed to educate the group, then maybe a discussion on a subject and then I'd move on to it becoming an informal meeting, i.e. off to the nearest bar for a few drinks and an informal chat?

    All the best

I had thought about this, and unfortunately, my usual days off from work are Friday and Saturday, which are both traditionally "date nights".

I would go with Thursdays, but in the Orlando area, Thursdays can be a big going out night because Disney folks get paid on Thursdays. As Disney is a major employer in the area, it is a concern. Additionally, I would need to find a different starting venue because Panera has a weekly game on Thursdays, so the environment would not be optimal.

As my work schedule can vary wildly with different start and end times, the rest of the week would be a challenge for me. It's why I didn't just become part of the other mastermind group that meets in the mornings (11:00 AMish).

With the 6:30 to 8:00 time frame, someone could still go out on a later date. They could also come from work if they work a 9-5 job in Orlando or at Disney. At least that was my thinking. I have put a lot of thought into both the day and time frame. Picking Fridays was the lesser of two evils.

Thanks Jason for your input, it helps, especially the thoughts on the structure.

      All the Best,

Thanks for sharing your experiences. It gives me an idea what to avoid.

        Very inspiring!

We've done meetup groups. We usually recommend people bring some snacks to share. Bring business cards or books to pass around. Have it run for about 90 minutes. Spend the first 30-45 min introducing each other (but it's casual and can turn into business related talk) and then cover a topic: list of resources, tax info, seo tips, etc.

Also, if you want to be really cool, you turn on a computer with a webcam and set up a Google+ hangout so others can join online.

This is also a great place to get people on an email list.

When I hosted my first mastermind over a decade ago I had it as an informal group. That worked out okay for a few weeks, but then ultimately nothing got done. It turned into some marketing chats but usually people would begin making small talk or having other distractions.

The most powerful masterminds I've ever been a part of or started had a very clear goal in mind. Even if it was as simple as "let everyone help one another grow their businesses" (but there would be definitely topics each week with homework assignments).

After 3 or 4 botched attempts, I finally figured out what worked for me, my personality type, and my learning / socializing style. It is VERY important to find like-minded individuals who have similar goals to you. Though I believe you should have SOME fun during the mastermind meetings, they should definitely have a focus and some seriousnesses to it if you want to really accomplish anything.

Jim I thing you should first gather everyone who is invited skype id and make a group on skype in order for everyone to get to know each-other and see what they think about the day/time/subjects of discussion, etc. Everyone is unique and the best answers you will get from your mastermind group members...

    Good luck

Good idea, I've not really used Skype much, but I'm not afraid of it either. That might be an opportunity for a different mastermind, though. It's definitely worth considering. Thanks.

I've recently joined skype, so I can hopefully get things going with that. I'm not sure if I want to connect it with the Friday thing, or set up a separate thing altogether for skype. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for the input.
