Calling ALL Analytics/Tracking Experts!

So I just launched my first product yesterday and the sales page is converting at a measly 1.6%

I have google analytics set up as well as Crazy Egg (heat maps)

The average time spent on my website is 50 seconds. The only thing I am getting from this is that the heading is compelling enough to get people interested. And my sales letter is only about 900 words since the product is not expensive. So here is my question...

What the hell should I test? I am new to this testing/tracking conversions stuff so I am having a little trouble deciding what to track.

Yesterday I got a total of 500 visitors to my website (the first 250 was converting even worse until I changed the header) so I think I should get somewhere in that neighborhood today.

How would you guys go about testing a website?

Would you first test which type of layout converts best?

And then after that you would focus on smaller details like parts of the content and such?

I am going to set up the website optimizer today so I really want make the most of it!

I really appreciate any thoughts anyone has to offer :-)

1.6% is not an unusual conversion rate where the benchmark is 1%.

What sort of conversion were you expecting, as a matter of interest?

    Cheers,

Well the product is $7 and I have talked to a couple other people who have launched low price products within this market and they have achieved rates of 7% supposedly. And they said that was off cold traffic as well (not from promoting to a list)

One day isn't much to go on. Sales go up and down all the time.

I tend to work with a month's figures before I make any decisions.

Anyway, I know this doesn't answer your question about increasing your conversion rate, so back to that...!

    Cheers,

Spirit - testing is a pain in the butt - but worth it...

The reason its a pain is precisely because of all the main points you bring up - where do you start when there are SO many variables?! Ultimately the trick is to start "somewhere" and just go down the list...

That said, there have been some studies done on how people read that might be of assistance.

    Above the fold:
+ Headlines - by far the most important thing on your page. Try different words, and try different colors. Depending on your niche, people might respond differently to different colors. Also, think of common headline tactics and put them in yours: "7 Secrets of..." or "How to....", or "What the so-called experts aren't telling you about..."
+ Sub-headers - also important. Consider them an explanation of the headline - make them benefit focused (ie, why does your reader care?)
+ images - do you have any images above the fold? test them...

Below the fold: After scanning the headlines above the fold, most people will scroll through the copy to the PS - play around with those and make them benefit focused. Next they scan up for pricing and guarantee, and if everything seems worth it from THAT point, then they'll scan the page - focusing on sub-headlines and bullet points more than actual text.

Ultimately if you can test ALL these things -good on ya! But I'd focus on headlines and the PS. I'd also recommend using the Google Website Optimizer. It's free and it allows you to do A+B split testing... Really slick stuff that should help you tackle this issue!

    Hope that helps!

    - Mark.
