Anyone jumped on a project on a whim and succeeded?

Sometimes I get too excited about a project and realize it won't make money after I buy a domain and pay for hosting. I'm just wondering if there are others like that. How much planning do you usually do before niche marketing and IM in general?

I always take action, if thats what you mean.

    Don't really do much planning.

I put in a couple hours research to see what my market needs and then boom! I get to work. I can usually take between 2-7 days to finish a decent product. But the product I'm working on now, I have been working on for 3 weeks and will continue to work on until late June, early August when I release it.

I just recently decided to stop jumping in head first without a plan (and I've been getting a lot of support from fellow Warriors).

I wouldn't typically buy domains and hosting, but I would snatch up any WSO that promised income from ANY source and of course it produced no results whatsoever.

My new approach involves taking ONE of the many business models available to us IMers and sticking with it until I've mastered it.

Sales copy is written to "sell" so of course I felt like every product (WSO or not) was a once in a lifetime opportunity that I couldn't afford to miss out on. The reality however, is that many of the models for earning an income online have been around for years and will probably remain for many years to come.

My advice (which is based on the advice I've received from Warriors who are actually making money online) is to choose one of the many business models available and build a real business out of it.

Choose something you'll actually enjoy and the work involved (there's always work involved) won't feel so much like work.

    Best of luck
    Ricky

A friend of mine started a project on a whim. No planning. Just a random idea, not even a domain.

He was drinking beer on a Friday night after getting dumped from his girlfriend.

He started programming and by Sunday he was worth 20 billion dollars.

If you fail to plan you plan to fail. Never do anything on a whim when you can do it prepared.

When i first started out, this is exactly what i did, but instead of learning from my mistake i just kept on doing it. There's 1 year i'll never get back.

Wow this is exactly the biggest problem I have had for a long time. I get an idea in my mind about a site and how to monetize it, then I get real excited. Then when it is time to buy the domain and start building I start doubting myself and think its a stupid idea and end up not doing it or delaying it. Stupid mind playing tricks on me!

Write the idea down. Snail mail it to yourself. When you get it back in the mail, if it still sounds like a good idea, do it.

Looking at the 30+ domain names I own I would have to say yes, I get carried away by the odd whim. Thankfully they are all in evergreen niches and (eventually) all profitable.

If you get yourself a re-seller account, you can dramatically cut your hosting expenses.

I can't tell you how many things I've started on a whim and didn't finish.

At the same time- there have been a few things I planned out and didn't finish, either.

That's why I really like the $5/day formula. If you can crank out one small project per week, you'll be doing pretty darn well by the end of the year AND a lot of that income will be passive!

    Win-win.

You need to do at least some basic research (e.g. keywords and customer demand) before you start a project on a whim, no matter how excited you are about it. But the good news is that you can get the minimum necessary data about the profitability of a niche or project in about 2 hours.
