What's With Asking for Thanks...

...in your posts? Is it a testimonial/social proof kind of thing that you are a helpful Warrior because you've got a bunch of thanks?

Just curious.

    Yep!

You nailed it on the head w/that statement!

    (Testimonial/Social Proof)

FWIW: I NEVER give a 'thanks' to anyone who ASKS for it!
I give it because I felt the information/software/whatever was worth the time it took the OP to post the thread to begin with...or someone made a comment that others wanted to say/mention, but didn't have the guts to say out in the open!

IMHO...If you're not willing to give to those who are less fortunate than you without asking for anything in return....then maybe you shouldn't start threads in the first place until you are willing to give OPENLY without asking for handouts!

But..this is MY opinion and much like gas mileage, yours will vary!

It's pretty hard to get lots of thanks on WF. Don't see any harm in asking and receiving, plus it's kind of like having merit badges or ribbons on a uniform if you have lots of thanks under your pic.

There isn't a tangible metric on the forum you can look to in order to determine expertise, other than slogging through the posts the user has made to get a sense of their credibility. Even then, it's a "Best Guess" because they could be just parroting others, talking the party line and turn out to be completely different.

If you want to build your brand and demonstrate your expertise, just participate here regularly, be consistent and contribute value to the forum.

Not really...so let me repeat what I just said:

If you want to build your brand and demonstrate your expertise, just participate here regularly, be consistent and contribute value to the forum.
Well, if you look at the best selling WSOs you will notice that they are created by people with high reputation.. getting thanked is definitely a decent part of this forum.

Yes, you need to be consistent with your forum posting or you will barely stand out.

You should post insightful, value providing, and solution providing comments, because that´s where you get your reputation and traffic from.

If it wasn't, then it wouldn't mean anything. That's how social currency works: if anyone can have all they want, nobody cares how much you've got.

No you shouldn't ask for thanks. People should thank you naturally if you offered some kind of value.

I agree 100% that you should not ask and i never do.

However there does seem to be a high % of people who ask for help and when they do get detailed answers from people still don't bother to say thanks in the thread let alone by clicking that button.

Maybe it's a bit like saying "good morning" to a stranger in the lift or someone who makes eye contact with you..........most people seem shocked and don't quite know what to do when i smile and say good morning lol

While it is cool to have lots of thanks, it looks rather desperate when at the end of your post, you write out a small request to other members to thank you.

It violates both online and offline social norms! I only click thanks when I find something super or informative. If you're not getting any thanks, there is probably a reason for it

Getting thanked is a huge help in building your brand here at WF.

The more thanks you get, the more value you provide, the more you will be seen as an expert in your field.

But it´s definitely not correct to ask for thanks. You want people to naturally thank you because they could benefit from your thread or post.

    Bear that in mind..

Well sure, no one is going to die from it; but "thanks" are supposed to be given because you made a useful post, not because you ask for it every time you say something. Really defeats the purpose of the feature.

Only a fool would seriously consider somebody's 'thanks' count when deciding if they should trust / do business with them.

Just like pretty much everything online, it can be gamed - and I place asking for thanks in that category.

WF thanks isn't an indication of how well someone runs their business, how trustworthy they are or how knowledgeable they are. If you believe it is, I'll see you back here in a few months crying about how a "reputable warrior ripped you off".

It's a bit lame alright, asking for thanks.

I always give thanks, if someones answered my question, or helped me, have to say, a lot of the time I return the favour, I get no thanks... maybe some warriors are just not aware of the thanks button?

Asking for thanks at the end of your post is a dick move, and just proves that you started a thread for self promotional reasons.

Many people are generous about clicking the thanks button. If you're not getting any thanks, then maybe you just aren't providing the "amazing" value you think you are.

I never look at peoples thanks count.

When people ask for thanks it makes me not want to thank them.

If you want people to thank you, the best way is to post stuff that deserves it.

Could you all please thank this post.

Wait, I thought we were able to redeem our thanks "points" into valuable cash and prizes. That's the reason you see all the begging for "thanks" around the forum.

Is this not true? You mean I'm saving up my thanks points and I'm not going to get my sea monkeys after all?

Yea getting thanked by a lot of warriors helps other warrior distinguish helpful warriors from those who are not so helpful yet.

I see no harm if I included for example a phrase like this at the end of a helpful reply:
"If you see this post helpful/useful, then please press the "THANKS" button "

    That's my 2 cents

If you see this post helpful/useful, then please press the "THANKS" button :p

The Warrior Forum already does this for you by sticking the button right at the bottom of every post for users to click should they find your post worthy.

Posting that phrase just makes it look like you are fishing for thanks, which is perplexing to say the least...

        Hey Joe,

yeah I know that, but some warriors (especially new ones) still don't know how or where or when to use it.

But I understand your point of view and maybe it is not a good move after all

Not really. Some of the best information often comes from members who don't post that much and therefore haven't accumulated a ton of thanks. Learning to recognize useful information by examining the merits of an individual post is a worthwhile skill to acquire.

I see no harm if I included for example a phrase like this at the end of a helpful reply:
"If you see this post helpful/useful, then please press the "THANKS" button "
Where you might see a simple and harmless request for thanks, others will read: "Please thank me - I'm desperate for love!". That's not such a good look.

I seriously don't care about the "thanks" or any of that, never even wanted any, but i've noticed one thing, even if the post or information is useful, most people give the thanks to people who are either pretty old here on warrior forum or have a huge amounts of "post count."

People thank posts that they like...

Joe Robinson and I share a common problem though...

I have given out 6249 Thanks... I guarantee you that if there were no limits, my outgoing Thanks would have probably exceeded 20,000 by now...

The WF restricts us to 25 Thanks per 24-window of time, and we always run out before 4am...

I have given out 6249 Thanks... I guarantee you that if there were no limits, my outgoing Thanks would have probably exceeded 20,000 by now...

I'll just add what I've said before in posts here.

Thanks, like respect, should be earned not asked for.
