How to place adsense ads in wordpress blog

I have a wordpress blog that iam trying to place ad sense ads in however whenever i try they show up in the wrong palce for example

if this was my site blogTO | Toronto blog

I want to have two long vertical ads on the left and right side of the page in the grey area. However whenever i attempt to place the ad it ends up showing in the white area. Any help would be much apprechiated

    Well, go to adsense.com and generate the code for you.
    After that go to your wordpress widget and add in a "text".
    Insert the code within the text and that's all

    I go to update theme and then add my adsense to the sidebar. You can paste the code you get where ever you want. Or as Wil said look for a wordpress plugin and it will give instructions for you how to add it to your posts.
