Hi

Just getting started with IM. I have been reading alot and now I'm ready to get started.

I know that the best domain names are those of the keywords that you want to own. That being said, its almost impossible to find any left.

I have also read that dashes are not desirable.

What are the thoughts on sub domains?

Thanks!!!

Ashley

EMD is not nearly as important as it once was. Just find a domain which is memorable and not too long. Stick to no more than three words if at all possible. You can also get creative with domain names. For example, try misspellings (like Jotz instead of Jots).

    Hope that helps.

    Eric

P.S. The most important thing is quality content and good SEO. The domain name isn't all that big of a deal.

Hyphens not dashes have pluses and minuses. If you announce your site name at a meeting people may forget to type them in. On the other hand they help Google know where the words in your url break. Search this forum and you'll find examples of why this can be important.
Short answer bad for type in traffic, sometimes good for SEO.

I agree with Eric. Get something short and easy to remember. If you are serious about your business you should care about branding in the very beginning. However I would stay away from misspellings. When I tell someone to go to photoxpress.com they always mess it up.

domains with dashes such as your-domain.com work better in backlinking as they are anchor text whereas yourdomain.com does not work in terms of anchor text. A domain name that contains your main search engine keywords can get your site on page one simply due to it's keywords. But for worldwide coverage on google you need a dot.com best as any national extension will only rank highly in that countries google as far as I know.

          always with .com

Go in Google keywords. download a few thousand relevant for your niche.

Dump that in the free keyword tool of market samurai.

Check the one with less competition/most searches. likely to be 2, 3 words or more.

Always put these keywords as well in the title of every page.

          That's your foundation.

The domain name will contribute to your sales maybe 5% if it is a really good domain. The other 95% have nothing to do with the domain name at all. Yes some people may not take you as seriously if you have a sub-par domain but you should lay much more emphasis on your content and the quality of it. Search engines do not care about exact match domain names any more. Slashes and dashes and whatever work fine.

Just get a decent domain and move on do not spend too much time worrying if its perfect or not....

People spend TOO much time worrying about their domain name. While it's important, I would not over analyze it. Just pick something catchy that has to do with your niche and keep moving forward.

Well, I suppose it depends on why you want your domain name to contain the keyword. In terms of your Google ranking and SEO, it will help a little bit.

If your target is to generate traffic to your website / squeeze page to build a list, then techniques like forum posting, blog commenting, article syndication and PPC are most important, and your success will depend very little on your domain name.

If you engage in effective on/off-page SEO, your domain could have nothing to do with your services/products and still rank high in Google.

Fresh, relevant content with strong anchor links is key. Google loves fresh content.

It's easy to spend a lot of time picking out a domain name but be careful it doesn't just become an excuse to procrastinate. Pick a domain name and then make it work. If this will be your main website then commit yourself to it. There could be a million reasons why you should never name your online bookstore Amazon but if you're good at marketing you'll make the name a good one even if it wasn't to begin with.

Just try to maintain the keyword in the domain and maybe add another word.

^ In regards to the comment that EMD are not as important; they still do carry value. We have EMD sites that rank on 1st page without any SEO work with some good onsite optimization.

On site Optimization is REALLY Imporant; I can't stress this enough. It can determine how much money you need to spend offsite on link building...but don't over do it (google is now penalizing sites who overdo their onsite optimization)

Just keep things natural, mix up the keywords (try targeting 3 keywords/site is a good variety and not too much) and most importantly make sure your site quality upholds with the content.

So back to the domains for example if say you wanted carsforsale.com you can try carsforsalesite.com or findcarsforsale.com etc.

Words that fit at the end or begging that makes sense and adds to the domain. Also watch out not to make this too long.

You can also sometime try to go with an authority site instead somethings to keep in mind is something catchy; try to include your niche in it if possible (you likely will be using the niche in your keyword anyways so it'll help)

Well that was a long response but hope you can get something from it!

    • Domain name doesn't affect your SEO rankings. However, it is important to make sure that the domain name you choose is relevant to the content of your site. Make a list of keywords related to the topic chosen and then try to find a good domain name that includes one of the keywords that you want to target.

Not one person on here can say for definite what works and what doesn't - it's all down to experiences people have had. Personally, I think EMD or domains with at least 50% or more of your keywords in are valuable to SEO. If I was to build a site for targeting mens trainers, I would aim for one of the following (preferably the first two, the latter if there's searches on that phrase also):
    MensTrainers.x
    Mens-Trainers.x
    Trainers-For-Men.x

But, it's not the be all and end all. There's millions of sites that rank for keywords with completely irrelevant domains, simply through optimisation. I think it depends if you want to make a 'big brand' website or just something for a specific niche. Everyone will have their own opinion, get testing and come up with your own!
