How to go about crediting images on your site?

Alright I was just wondering what the best way to credit an image that you use on your site? Specifically a wordpress site.

    There are three ways:

    1. Use image editing software to insert "Image by: XXXXX"
    2. Include a caption which says "Image by: XXXXXX"
    3. Highlight the photo, click the link button and put in a link back to the artist's site.

If you want to be sure you're doing it right, combine either 1 or 2 along with 3.

I'm not sure what you're asking. In general, you should be buying rights to your own images at a site like istockphoto.com or using public domain images.

If you're just surfing google images for something cool to use, that ain't the way to do it.

Many sites offer photos for free use in exchange for attribution.

You can use some Google images for free. Just type in the Google search bar "Google advanced image search". You can search for images by putting in keywords and the type of image (clip art, photo etc.

Filter the images by selecting the free usage rights. These images can be used, shared or even used commercially etc.

Depending on the type of images you need...there may not always be a wide selection, but for certain keywords you can find a variety of images that will work for you.

I recently watched a prominent warrior on a webinar grab a random image out of a Google image search and not give a second thought to who owned or had the rights to that image.

I am about to launch a website with over 100 unique articles, all with photos I have taken myself or acquired from stock image sites legally and if he had used one of my images and I found out, I think I would be a little upset with him (even if he gave me a credit).

Probably wouldn't go legal on him, but because he was using it to link to a CPA offer, I would probably ask him to take it down.

The images I didn't take myself come from dreamstime dot com and because they were acquired the right way the images don't have a watermark and I will not be placing a credit on them.

There are plenty of free or low cost options that don't require you to give credit or break the law.

If you acquire your images the right way, you will only ever have to give credit out of gratitude, not obligation.

You could put that type of credit anywhere in the same page as the image.

Like I said, many sites that offer free images do so in exchange for giving credit. Obviously you still need permission to use an image. If you don't have said permission, then all the acknowledgement in the world won't help you (Unless it's a news article).

Loads of people use Creative Commons licensed images, some of which (note: *some*) just say that you need to attribute. That said, most people think this means you only need to write "Photo by XXXX" where the actual license states you have to mention who took it, the full name of the creative commons license and a link through to the human readable explanation of the license.
