Male vs Female Voiceover Narrator?

Hey, I don't really have time to split test at the moment because my last voiceover person disappeared on us. Anyway, we're making a video product for an IM/Offline Marketing niche and we're trying to decide between a female and male voice over actor. We already filmed an actress for one portion so I'm wondering if we should use a male now for the narration. My research on it has been inconclusive on which gender would appeal more to the targeted audience.

The target audience is small business owners if that matters. Who would you go with a male or a female for the voice over?

Thanks for any help.

    Hey fpharaoh

I've never heard any conclusive evidence in either direction and so it sounds like a split test is gonna be the only way to know for sure but now that I think about it, whenever I've listened to audio trainings or watched video trainings, the gender of the presenter was of no significance to me.

My only concern was the quality of the content, so if I were you I wouldn't get too hung up on this.

Also if you're stuck trying to find a voiceover artist you can either look in the Warriors For Hire section here on the forum and see if anyone is interested in doing this for you or you can check a website like Voices.com

    Good luck

Split testing is the only way, but if it is personal preference, i would go for male.

As long as the message content is all good, and it flows, makes sense, and defines the products main selling points/why they need the product, I would go as far as saying it will not matter at all.

After having tested many times female vs male I would definately go with male.

Yep, male adds what some viewers consider more firm and resolute advise. It's all about emotions, trying to manipulate how a person feels about the product.

I don't think you are going to like the answer.

The ONLY way to answer this question is by split testing. What others on this forum think is totally irrelevant. They are just opinions and it's likely to be different to what your target market thinks. Only your market can tell you what they like.

A little off topic but, one observation I've made is that the iPhone Siri assistant is female in the US and male in the UK. Why? What is that telling us?...

There's no different for me whether the voice over is a male or a female, I always focus on the content.

This has made me thinking which one is better. Since what you are doing is for a business video I think my vote goes to male voice overs. They have this kind of professionalism tone and business like voice. While females have an emotional pull, that is why they are usually use in documentaries rather than business videos.

Honestly, it does not really matter a female voice can be as convincing as males'. Since you do not wish to do a split test, might as well focus on your content and makes sure the flow is there.
