Do I Need to Buy Another Hosting Account?

I just got into IM 3 months ago and my friend recommended me to buy a hosting package with Fusion- which I just found out is based in the UK. Given that I am targeting customers in the United States, do I need to buy America-based hosting to truly optimize my rankings?

Thanks in advance

It makes sense to get a .com and go with a reputable hosting company like Hostgator. Let me know if you need a link, lol.

I don't think it will make a huge difference, just as long as you don't start using a ".co.uk" as well.

I've been at this for years, and though I did have a dedicated at one time, I'm still using a cheap hostgator account as my primary hosting.

FWIW I use a hosting service that is based overseas and the support and features that come with every site are fantastic. And the cost is only about $60 per year. Where the hosting service is based is not the issue. It's the service and support that matter. Downtime + no support + lack of ability to do multiple things like autoresponders, forums, and ecommerce = B.A.D.

Hey bathunter, I would recommend going with the american based hosting service, mainly becuase they provide a dot com, which helps with seo... I don't think UK based hosting services provided that.

Given that it took you three months to figure out where your own site is located, how likely do you think your customers are to figure it out, and how relevant do you think it is?

Abraham, I'm talking about web hosting. Fusion(UK-based) will host any domain extension I point at its servers. I register my domains with NameCheap. Isn't the country of your hosting company relevant to your rankings? HostGator is US based so my site's IP would be in the United States if I host with them. Right now I'm hosting with Fusion so the sites have a UK IP. Am I right about this?

There are some very minor search advantages in having your site hosted where most searchers are searching from, but I don't think its very important. The difference in your websites speed is probably more important (although even that may not be to significant for UK vs. US.)

Here is "why you might need to have another hosting account".
      • It's better to have your domain with .com extension.
      • As your website content is going to be more relevant to USA based users, It makes sense to have your hosting company located in USA for faster access and speed.
      • Another Issue you might face is: "data protection issues".

If you are concerned, then go for a webhost such as HostGator and copy over your site to Hostgator. Keep your existing host as a back up and to host something relevant that you can use to link to the new hosting service (a little link juice!).

Hosting is so cheap for a basic account that it's worth having a back up hosting service containing a dormant but full copy of your primary business website(s) - just in case your primary host fails - think earth quake, fire, war, civil disturbance, bankruptcy and the list goes on.

If sh*t happens, then just change your DNS pointing to the alternative host.

Have your own back ups under your own control too though!

      Just my thoughts,
      Jeff.

You should consider Yahoo Webhosting. They're excellent for what you're trying to do.

Depends on your plans and your sites, but Hostgator offers unlimited domains hosted on one hosting account, so if you're going to have a lot of sites, a plan like that pays off. I don't know what Fusion is or why you need it.

I'd definitely go for a US based host for your US ventures. After all, you're only looking at $5-10 a month for a reputable and quality host.

    I'd recommend HostGator or Arvixe.
