Back into Online Marketing, need general guidance for new Authority Domain project! :)

Hello all,

I've been away for a couple of years tending to the '9-5 job' and 'new wife' :p

I wanted to get some general guidance on a project I am starting with a good friend.

First, a sentence to describe my past SEM experience : 2 years ago I started and created a dozen small niche sites that all got to first page Google for mid-competition keywords but lacked follow-through so they were generally unsuccessful.

Now, 2 years later, I am back with an experienced friend who serves as a programmer and web developer. We seek to create an authority site on a certain upper-mid-competition keyword. As far as competition is concerned, it is most likely the equivalent to the keyword "ice chests". With hundreds of different brands, shapes and sizes to optimize for, etc.

Our initial goal with the project is to write quality, unique content ourselves (as we are broke and cannot afford to purchase), and do extensive research on the project, and create about ~30 pages of 400-800 words each. We also plan to find affiliate sales opportunities/advertising opportunities to financially benefit from only AFTER we see steady flow of traffic (no advertising until we get solid traffic!)

Like I said, we hope to be an authority site, learn as much as we can by creating this authority site, and streamline the process in order to create more like it. After 2-3 sites, begin optimizing them for List growth and the like.

So what I want to know from you all is... well, pretty much any experience and advice you have! Please keep it as white hat as possible, as we would love to see this be a long term project; we expect little to no financial benefit during the first few months, but are hoping for a very solid foundation within a year or two.

Thanks so much, and it's glad to be back among the Warriors!

I also wanted to get a clarification on how many words of *quality* content per page would be suggested to assist in building authority

I find the number of words to be completely irrelevant.

Use as many words as you need to come across as a professional who delivers value in his articles. That's the thing people are looking for - value.

What's in it for them? They're trading time for your articles. If they find their "return on investment" was bad (you didn't offer them the value they were hoping for), they are going to replace you and find a better place to go to.

That's all you need to care about. Find out what burning questions you could answer for your visitors and answer them by really providing value. Not just pure theoretical nonsense, but practical step-by-step information that they can apply and use right now.

Always remember - what goes in, comes out.

    Kind Regards,
    Zannix

Yep high quality content is a must for these types of projects.

zannix is right when he says that the length is largely irrelevant, if you want to make the website as good as possible for the user, you just have to use as many words as is necessary to get your point across.

You seem to have the right idea though, high quality content getting added on a consistent basis, give it time add some high quality backlinks, avoid the spammy stuff and you'll have your authority site.

Thank you marko and zannix! You re-affirmed my inclination that quality content should be the focus. While I want to make 'fast money' just like everyone else, I understand that establishing a solid foundation of authority, content, and trust can lead to much greater gains in the long run. After all, we're marketing to people and not numbers.

As far as these 'high quality links', I assume you are referring to making connection with relevant niche authority sites and somehow talk them into slapping a link on their page? That certainly is my goal as soon as I find some good methods to create networking relationships like that (will be even harder to keep it from being reciprocal though, Google doesn't like those do they? Two way links?)

I wasn't going to do any backlinking at first, keeping it as natural as possible and letting the content speak for itself. If you could shed some light on the concept of 'high quality' links, please send some links/articles my way to brush up on!
