.us extention? Pros?? Cons?? SEO??

I have an idea for a website but the .com costs a fortune. The keyword has low competition and pretty good searches. Would .us be viable?

This website has to do with american football. Often when people search for football, they could mean soccer or american football. So in this case .us may actually even add some clarity.

Thoughts?

The pros would be that .us extensions are cheaper to buy, and that they are more favored on Google US than other country specific extensions. The cons are that they are less favored than .com's, .net's, .org's, .gov's, and .edu's, and that they will be less favored on other countries versions of Google.

With the right amount of work or services though, the slight disadvantage of a .us can be overcome fairly easily.

Personally, I use one as my web design businesses main page and I achieve high rankings regardless of the extension.

It depends on your target customers. If you will be using a .us domain, you might want to focus on the US market, and will definitely gain more authority there. Think about the clients - if you are expecting most of them to be located in China, .us might not be so good, right?

Dotcoms cost about $5 so when you say the .com costs a fortune I'm guessing you mean there's an existing .com name you want to use?

So why not just use a different, brandable .com?

Where do you get your .com's for $5? the only time i have seen them that cheap is when there is a promotion going on.

I have not used any .US myself but i have seen them in the top 10 when doing keyword research so I would say for American Football related items it should be fine.

Its one of those "premium" names that the registrar's have and jack up the price. The Exact Keyword Match for what I want as a .com is like 18,000 lol.

Well, all we know that .com is given the highest value however, if we managed to find some domain names with good name having relation to USA then we should register, if I talk about SEO point then it is not so bad, it works fine.

Iirc, you have to be a US citizen also. I own 1 .us domain that I've never used, and I also own it's .me partner. I was going to setup an alerts thing, so I bought alerts4.me and alerts4.us and then never got around to doing anything with them. I remember having to jump through extra hoops on the US one.
