I was wondering.... Is it better to approve the comments left on my product review site or leave them unapproved? I am asking because, is it better for ranking.... seeing how it makes the blog look active? Or does it really not make a difference!

Having good related comment to your page is good and a great way for your visitors to trust appreciate your content.

This has nothing to do with ranking, leaving a comment or not on your blog and getting it approved is a choice.

If you have a number of related quality comments, your visitors will get to perceive your website as a more valuable source.

I don't think commenting brings much benefit for ranking, if any at all.

    Wish you all the best,
    Rado

Yes, it does make a difference. Having a strong responsive community can increase the authority you have with your relationship with your people. Strong feedback sends a signal that you are providing value which is essential.

Comments are wonderful if you can get enough people to comment on your site. If no one comments, however, it can look really bad. Just make sure you start allowing commenting when you have developed a good size reader base.

If the comments are not spam, I think approve them is better for ranking.

From what I understand Google likes to see new content added to our sites on a continuous basis. Google has even announced that they have a freshness algorithm that they originally implemented on newsy sites but have now expanded the algorithm to include all sites.

Allowing comments and approving them if they are not spamming is an easy way to add new content to your sites on a continuous basis without having the write content yourself.

One thing you may want to do is remove any links in the comments or at least make them no follow.

I love comments, and I don't see any reason why I would not publish them unless they were spammy or seem even remotely automated.

Comments bring positive discussion on your blogs, which can itself increase the level of recurring and new traffic. It will not harm your rankings. As wolfmanjack has mentioned, it might just help your rankings with Google loving new content .

If you use akismet normally you can let the comments go straight on without moderating, this speeds up the discussion. Then just check regularly for any spam. If it becomes a problem switch moderation on.

There are other ways to stop spam such as the captcha codes, but bots can often get around those too.
