Using dash for your domain name makes it harder for people to remember because they are used to typing domain name without dash.

Including dash also makes it look unprofessional.

It is much better to use a suffix instead of a prefix for SEO purpose.

It's actually a "hyphen", not a dash: those are two different punctuation marks.

For SEO purposes, it has absolutely no relevance at all, as Google and Matt Cutts explain openly and repeatedly on blogs, websites, videos and so on.

However, there can be a number of other downsides, including the potential for loss of traffic to the owner of the unhyphenated version.

That said, there are some domain-names that look better and make more sense when clarified with hyphens, as would perhaps be confirmed - with hindsight - by the owners of penisland.com and the celebrated molestationnursery.com.

I don't mind dashes in my domains if...

It's not a "branded" site. As in, if it's a review site or a site that people will probably only visit once.

However, if it's a site you want them to visit regularly, perhaps a business, I wouldn't recommend dashes.

If the site and what it is offering is good enough, then people will remember it whatever.

I have a couple of sites with hyphens in it, they do no worse or better than the ones without, thats all I can say.

IfItsTooLongItMayBeConfusing if there is no dash isn't it? Putting dash can sometimes be useful, but a long domain wouldn't be a great domain huh?

Somtimes long domain names are the only option. I saw this name the other day for a wrestling promotion:

ShowcaseChampionshipWrestling.com longest domain ever, but SCWrestling.com was already taken, so they had to go ahead and buy the long form.

If the website has value and provides awesome content. The url address is slightly irrelevant. That only works for a blog more so than a product/sell website.

The dash works for ranking because I have #1 ranked site for someone competitive term and it has a dash.

As far as professionalism, I think it would be best to have a short, sweet .com but sometimes that just isn't possible.
