I want to start a little controversy here

Do you think charging for software or program updates is a good business practice?

OR

If you have a WSO software or program that is increasing in price (either
by dimesale or numbers sold), do you think it is good business practice to
charge for updates?

Don't think so, you will start getting hate mail but if you create version 2.0 you will still get hate mail but little less.
Joke aside, don't think your customers would like the idea of charging for updates, the only way to get away with it is to sell it as a plugin or add-on

    It depends.

Are you adding TONS of functionality to it? If so- I think its okay to charge for it.

Are you just fixing bugs or adding some "nice to haves"? If so, do it for free.

Depends on the program and what the updates are honestly.

Lots of B2B programs in the real world charge for updates or charge monthly license fees with free updates. Some even charge mouthly and charge for updates. Our dealership software does I believe.

It's rare that I would buy WSO software that required paid updates.

Updates and Bug Fixes should be Free.

Feature updates can require a upgrade price.

I myself have never really ever paid for any software updates it is extremely rare. As for my opinions, I would say if your updates are really that beneficial to your customers then go ahead.

I think that if you have a program or software (WSO or not) that is raising in price, you should not raise the price for an update, especially if it is not stated on the sales
    page.

I have no problem if it is stated on the sales page for that product that a new feature will be added at a later date for a fee.
