No not really. No one seriously thinks of it as unlimited.

It is the same as 'all you can eat' buffets and unlimited coke refills at pizza hut.

The chances are your stomach will be full before you can really run them out of coke or pizza - and the same with the hosting - the chances are you will get a few hits a day and upload a few Mb and they'll be OK with that.

If you have a million visitors a day you will probably invest in better hosting anyway so they don't need to worry about that.

You explained this far better than I ever could. I've seen a discussion about this very topic on a few forums and I think you finally explained it in a way that is more understandable. It is considered unlimited because there is not really much chance the user will exceed the usage of the hosting.

It's a shame that the hosting spec. wars led to replacing useful metering specs with the "unlimited" account offers, leaving us with less real specs to use in comparison shopping.

Instead the hosts come up with some fabricated reason to force you to upgrade should you outgrow their undisclosed internal limits.

I would be happier with spelled out space and bandwidth limits within which I would be guaranteed good performance. There should really be more industry standard performance measurements that would help the comparison shopping process, rather than the opinions of commission driven comparison sites.

I agree with webapex.

I have not signed up for any of the so called unlimited accounts because I had already been told that they are not unlimited.

I prefer to know what resources I have available.

It doesn't bother me a bit. I've read through posts of "super-users" who exceeded their unlimited accounts and what they went through to gain more power and it wasn't that scary. I believe it was Jim Hudson (here on the WF) who stated that he burned out 3 or 4 HostGator servers before finally getting a package that could handle his traffic.

I'm nowhere near that big (yet), so I can deal with a (not really) unlimited account. $8 a month doesn't hurt my feelings, either.

The main problem with "unlimited" hosting is that 9 times out of 10, you're in an overloaded environment & also limited by resources you can use. Read the terms of service, in most cases you're limited by inodes.

There's no such thing as unlimited disk space or bandwidth. Why would someone pay for a specified amount of space & traffic when they can get unlimited.....it's used for marketing, and marketing only.

Unlimited - overloaded, oversold, a lot of security vulnerabilities when companies offer this since it seems to attract people doing shady activities a lot.

Limited - better performance, non-overloaded servers, better resource management, additional features etc.

I want someone to explain to me how offering unlimited disk and bandwidth is worse than offering unlimited CPU and disk IO. The latter are much more scarce of a resource, but nobody strictly limits them and I never hear a complaint about that.

It's a lie. Who enjoys being lied to? There are no unlimited hard drives, so you better believe your inodes are limited. You're better off knowing what the exact limits are.

Yes, because it's an obvious lie. There's no such thing as unlimited - it should be "unmetered" - and that's a big promise.

If you offer unlimited bandwidth, you better prepare for the event of someone taking you up on that. And just because you include a clause about "acceptable use" or "some restrictions may apply" doesn't mean you're protected.

I don't know the stats of getting more clients by offering unlimited hosting package because I am not the guy who offer those service. But somehow so many hosting company, resellers, cloud drive are having these unlimited plan. Maybe it is a good marketing strategy at least to make people see what actually the offer is.

But as mentioned by MrStinky you better get ready with consequences.

A lot of hosts that don't offer unlimited space and bandwidth still oversell their servers. If everybody used up all of their space & bw, the server would still probably die.

Cloud hosting would be more reliable because that way the load is shared over multiple servers. If you have a really popular site then you should be using a CDN and your own server in my opinion.

Exactly.

Most of the "limited" plans offer amounts like 50GB or 100GB which is not a single bit less ridiculous than "unlimited".

And anyone who knows anything about server management knows that disk IO will kill you a hundred times over before disk space becomes a problem. A 1MB site can easily overload a server hitting the SQL server with joins on unindexed tables.

I dont think this kind of hosting really exists and if yes are they reliable and consistent in their service?? I am with cloudclaim rt now and they are the best with no downtime and fair consistency. They do have cloud discounts on their hosting palns !!

Pretty much not.. I have a tech blog, which hardly uses any bandwidth. On very much extent, i cant even use a few GB's , so i usually dont bother about unlimited or anything..

Try any plan with HostGator for example. It tells you 'unlimited hosting' but as soon as you start uploading files you must take care of Bandwidth or your website will not work till the end of the month. I always try to pick a plan that is suitable to my hosting requirements for the upcoming year at least.

I'm for sure bothered regarding unlimited hosting strategy. because, as far as i know as soon as u reach their internally defined level, your bandwidth gets limited. And its always better to know what u r getting and for how much, instead of being in the dark.

I used to have a host with "unlimited" features, was constantly running into slowdowns, etc, I finally bailed into a structured plan, cleaned out my directories of junk (got all that space, ya know, unlimited), and moved large files onto S3 to save space and bandwidth charges. I was so concerned that I bought extra disk space, that I subsequently didn't need.

Now I just monitor space and logs, don't use my web server as a file server, and it seems to be working out just fine with the new "limitations."

I, in no way, want to manage servers -- I have enough to do!

I have two different "unlimited" accounts with different hosts. I only had a problem once as my business grew and it was remedied within hours. That was 7+ months ago and have not had a problem since. Hosting space and bandwidth can be had at great prices.

I used to have a "Lifetime Unlimited" hosting account, but lost it due to spammers posting porn in my forum. I tried to delete it, but there were too many of them.
Last time I checked, I'm still alive, but I no longer have that hosting plan. Talk about "false advertising"!

You'll get suspended for using too much CPU (which is never unlimited) at about the same time they regret selling you unlimited bandwidth, so it still works out for them in the end.

It doesn't bother me at all.

Of course, I would have to read the fine print, especially if it has an asterisk (*) attached to it - which most do

I remember a similar marketing strategy used by mobile networks here in UK.

They have a BIG FLASHY "UNLIMITED" calls, internet, etc.. but at the end, there's an asterisk which is a sort of a legend to the fine print.

I have used Hostgators baby plan for ages and have upgraded to the business plan, of course they are not unlimited but the ceiling is set so high for anyone not ready for dedicated hosting that you are unlikely to max it out.

Once you have a steady income transfer over to dedicated hosting.

Never ever use or offer to others a reseller account, they are rubbish for you and any one unfortunate enough to take up your offer.

The only thing to be aware of with Hostgator for business is that you cannot use IMAP email as you are limited to 25 processes running at anyone time and IMAP will max that out instantly which means all of the sites on that account will go offline
