Help! My online files keep re-naming...

I'm experiencing a problem with my online files:

for some reason, strange combinations of letters are added to the folder- and file names.

Example:
wp-admin changes into wp-admin--amt
wp-includes
changes to wp-includes--sgg
250x250.gif changes to 250x250.gif--wvt

...

(It happens to some folders only - most are wp installs.)

I haven't found out what triggers the process yet.
After re-uploading/renaming the files, the problem seems to be fixed, but just a couple of minutes later, files are being re-named again.

According to my web hosting company this is caused by one of my installed scripts, and they advised me to check them. The problem is I have no idea where to start looking - or for what...

    Who is your webhost?

Seems to me that if they are taking your money, that they could assist you with finding the problem...

    That is a mystery!

Do you have any products (i.e. an autoresponder) that might be using a CRON job? I ask that because you say the files are OK for a little while after you upload them again, but then get corrupted. Sounds like if it is a script it's one that is run periodically.

I would try running the fies on a local server, I use an Ubuntu Linux box configured as a development server but you could also use a Windows workstation running WAMP. You could either install your sites one by one and see if you can catch the script that is causing it, or do it the other way - install everything and eliminate things until the problem disappears. If the problem doesn't surface on your local server then there is something wrong at your hosting account and you should have them take another look at it. If they don't give you satisfaction you could always change hosts.

    Good luck

Thanks for the tips. I'm still checking the site - no luck so far.

I know, but I got this Hostmonster account beacuse I didn't want to put all my eggs in one basket (=Hostgator)

I simply can't believe Hostgator is the only decent one out there...

If you are using cPanel, see if there are any cron jobs set to run every x minutes as it seems to be triggered by one. This may indeed be beyong any standard webhost customer support coverage if it's caused by a script you got installed on the hosting account.
