First site up and looking to continue!

A little backstory: I'm 18 and starting college in the fall. Like every kid my age I want to move out, but even between the 2 jobs i have right now I Might be able to afford rent and only rent making it impractical to move out. So here I am trying to make a little extra. My goal is by this time next year to be able to pull 2k a month. Whether this is realistic or not im not sure, but it helps to have a goal to work towards.

Here is what I have so far:
I did the 30 day challenge thing, I heard it was good for first timers so i tried it out. I did research and built a website. I have some backlinks built to the site, and a few articles posted linknig to the site. Google adwords said it gets 780 exact searches a month. Right now I'm ranked second on google for an exact match and get about 2-3 visitors a day. So, whats the next step in helping to improve my traffic? Should i just keep up articles and backlinking and maybe create a page on other sites, or is there something else, or should i scrap this site altogether and move on.

Another issue I have is the blog like design of my site. During the Challenge they suggested I use wordpress to direct to create my site, and while easy to use I feel like I don't have much control over my site. I want it to look more like an actual site and less like a blog. It might just be me, but I feel like going to an actual site gives more credibility to the creator than a blog does. Is there anything out there that can help me do this? I have a pretty decent understanding of HTML and have designed a few sites in the past. Nothing really extravagant, but enough to fit my vision of the site I want.

Lastly, I also run a small business of Ebay. I visit local thrift stores and resell cheap items I pick up there. I make a bit off this, but want to expand to my own storefront and try to eliminate ebay's fees and deal with just paypal. I'm thinking of using the packing slip in my ebay sales to help market my site, but I can see a lack of traffic to fully support this. I don''t really know the best way to go about this so any help is appreciated.

      Hi,
There are several ways to get low budget traffic.

      1. Article writing. You can order cheap articies from odesk.com like 20 for $10
and get them submitted to mass directories. order a gig on fiverr.com to get it done. Ofcourse the articles are based on keywords use google keyword tool to get low competion keywords.

      2. Twitter. use socialoomph.com to automate searches, doing it manually can be tidious.

      3. Video. create videos on animoto.com around your keywords. put your link in the description. Distribute your video to all video sites through trafficgeyser.com or order cheaply at Geyserguy will submit your video to all the video sites inside traffic geyser for $5, only on fiverr.com

      4. Create a fan page. drive traffic from fan exchange sites. cheaper than paying facebook ads

      Good luck

        Hi leetpete,

First - "I Might be able to afford rent and only rent making it
        impractical to move out."

STAY HOME!!!! At least for the time being. Enjoy the good life. I left
at 16 and had to really struggle while my friends were having a good
        time.

Second - "Here is what I have so far:"

        Keep Going Forward!!!!

Regardless of what you might hear or see, IM is work. Just keep moving
forward for now. You'll probably start seeing little results early on.
But if you quit you'll see nothing.

Third - "I don't have much control over my site. I want it to look
more like an actual site and less like a blog."

Wordpress is a real hair puller at first but you'll find that it's got
some amazing features. If you prefer pages vs. blogroll just go to the
admin panel and change it. One thing though: With mucho content you'll
find that the blog is mucho easier if something goes screwy on you.

Don't forget to back everything up.

Fourth - "I make a bit off this, but want to expand to my own
storefront and try to eliminate ebay's fees and deal with just paypal.
I'm thinking of using the packing slip in my ebay sales to help market
my site, but I can see a lack of traffic to fully support this. I
don''t really know the best way to go about this so any help is
        appreciated. "

Working with individual pieces is a pain in the @ss. However, you can
set up your own auction using various scripts (I think there's even
        one for WP).

Each time you send out a product insert a Thank You letter with your
site listed right at the top. You can use coupons, discounts or what
ever to ethically bribe them in. Just make sure you set up some way to
keep them coming back such as an autoresponder.

Sorry this is so vague but I'm in a bit of a rush here

PM me if you have questions.
        Signature

Right Now. What a wonderful time to start!

    Pete,
I am also something of a newbie, but I don't let that stop me ! I am already earning some sales and here is my advice to a fellow friend!

When getting started, focus on free or minimum fee traffics. This is because without your own branding as I call it, it is hard for you to gain credibility and for people to buy from you !

There are actually a few pretty fail safe ways to get traffic and here is some of them :
    1. Blogging - As you already have this, I wouldn't elaborate about it. All in all, it is a way for you to build relations with your subscribers and also to sell adspaces .

    2. Article Marketing - You can write your own articles or get to freelancers.com to get them write articles for you. Then , you submit them to ezine articles like as many as you can . This will increase your backlinks and sales will come flooding soon.

    3.

    4.

    5.

    6.

    ...........

There are too many ways and details for me to actually finish explaining, so here's the book and audio I look into to gain all these information ! They are free !

Click here for free book and audio to traffic marketing

As a matter of fact, I think this products are so good, I am even affiliating it ! That shows how much I rely on it !

Hope I helped, good luck to you, Pete !

WordPress is not just for blogs you can create amazingly looking sites, so I would suggest you to play with it and see what you can do. Additionally you can find some great free wordpress themes that really makes your website looks more than professional. Of course there are many premium themes starting from as low as 10$ so you really have a lot of options...
