Where can I get cool/free home diagram styled vector images?

I'll keep this simple we need a good home diagram photo to use at homeshows and the lady we paid to do the banner is now telling us we need to buy a vector image that she can work with.

I had initially sent her over a bunch of home diagram photos that she told us were copyrighted and she couldn't use. I asked her if I could just edit a copyrighted photo and change it to make it my own, and she said its possible but it would involve more work than I think.

I don't think she realizes I know how to edit things in photoshop though (not enough to make my own fancy diagrams however). If you go to google images and type in "home diagram" you get tons of fancy home diagram photos. Can't I just take one of these photos, change the background, change some colors, cut out some images/add some images inside the homes, then make it my photo?

Does that violate the copyright on the photo? We wouldn't technically be using the same exact photo, so I'm not 100% sure.

Otherwise I guess our only option is istock? Because they don't seem to offer any vector images that are even close to the jpeg images I'm finding on google.

To get a well priced, quality vector image, where can I go that has a large selection?

Any help on this I'd really appreciate. All the nice diagrams I want are copyrighted, then all these stock photo sites seem to suck as far as what they offer. I typed "home diagram" into istock and I'm getting all these clipart like images of homes. They just don't look professional like the ones on google. Or maybe I'm just not finding the good vector sites idrk.

Thanks Warriors! - Red

You can try to google for royalty free stock photo. Otherwise, these are the sites that I typically get the image from, microsoft image (you have to google as I dont remember the site name) and sxc (dot) hu

If you need a vector image than you need something else besides a Photoshop altered image because vector images consist of curves versus pixels. Hence they can be scaled up or down without degradation. You can't do that effectively with pixel generated images.

If you have the time to play around you could download a free program called Inkscape which is the open source equivelent of Illustrator as far as open source programs go.

Then you could use a standard image in one layer and draw your diagrams over it in another layer. Since you would be creating an original diagram you won't have the copyright issues you would have using an image off the web.

Now, since the learning curve is a steep one you may want to consider outsourcing the vector creation to someone who is familiar with that program or Illustrator. A call to your local college or an ad in craigslist may help you find someone local who can do the job reasonably if you feel having some sit-down time with the person is necessary to get your ideas to the point you'll get the results you are after.

If you don't need the sit-down time to explain your concept than perhaps outsourcing the job over the web would work.

But if your gal needs a vector image, give her a vector image. And if you haven't discovered this yet you'll see that vector images cost substantially more than regular images on some stock photo sites. They also may not exactly suit your needs if they aren't custom made.

      Anyway, just some thoughts...

yes, I would say you can get the image and change it as needed. If you are copying a image from online the resolution will be low. Depending on the file type and the dpi of the image you will not get a good print if it is for literature or signs etc..It will be rough without clean edges. If it is for online use the dpi does not matter as much.

If you purchased it then typically the seller will supply a high resolution copy for making revisions and for print.

You can find the image and use photoshop to trace the image then make edits save it as a high resolution file for print.

What is the image you need? I may have something like it or be able to help?
