I have been submitting for years now (1995) and still have not been entered

Its a niche I dominate in and I am suspecting the person who is the human editor is a competitor.

Many others who are in my niche are getting in.

There is a dirty little secret that not many people know about how the human editors run this directory. They get there own sites in, since they claim to be so short handed and if you can lend a helping hand you also monitor areas other than the assigned category.

Well at this point I dominate the niche and have no need for their link

I edit a category. I find that being an editor helps get sites reviewed faster.

I would volunteer to edit a category, then once you're in, email the editor of the category you need to be in and tell him that you're an editor, too, and you'd appreciate any help s/he can give you.

Has worked for me every time, but I don't abuse it, either.

A couple of my websites are in DMOZ, but honestly, I don't get much direct traffic from there.

It most likely helps my websites link popularity and PR, though.

Both of those sites are over 3 years old, but I never submitted...they appeared by themselves.

I got to know a DMOZ editor, and he showed me the challenges of their job. Many categories do not have a volunteer editor and they must wait until a editor with higher access (Meta-editor) comes across that category to add a site. It is not uncommon to have a submission take several months if the speciifc category doesn't have an editor.

The utility of a DMOZ listing is that several search engines and directories will spider DMOZ searching for links. Used to be that Google really liked DMOZ, now some say that it is more relied upon by Yahoo, and I have seen evidence to suggest that Google may not update findings from DMOZ categories that often.

Make sure your submission meets guidelines, otherwise it will be relegated to the back of the line. Feel free to PM me with your submission for some tips.

1. Volunteer to be an editor in DMOZ

2. Offer a WSO for a quicker view of your website to be considered for DMOZ listing in the category you are editing...

3. $299 a pop.

Sometimes you people amaze me. SOMETIMES you see things I don't and I think "DUH"! OTHER times, you miss the boat ENTIRELY!!!!!!!! DMOZ is a directory, of course, but a **********LOT********** of people use it! You see, Yahoo is basically YAHOO! Google is basically GOOGLE, except where people use GOOGLE sponsored links. But DMOZ!?!?!? NOPE! DMOZ really ISN'T DMOZ! When you "get listed in DMOZ", you aren't really listed in DMOZ, but in the OPEN DIRECTORY PROJECT! DMOZ is merely one of many thousands of front ends.

The Open Directory Project is used by MANY, including Google and, I believe Yahoo. If a new free large search engine opens up, they will probably use the open directory project as the seed data. If they DON'T, they will look vacant, or cheat.

Even many small sites may be encouraged to use one of the many programs that either scrape or frame dmoz, or extract data from the ODP!

DMOZ in Google: 36,800,000
Open Directory Project in Google: 16,200,000

And SOME are labeled in a more generic way, or not labeled!

BTW about how long it takes. Your site has to be worthwhile and targeted towards the topic. When you ask for it to be added, an EDITOR has to approve it. The lower the level, the easier it is for a GOOD site to get included, and the greater the chance for an appeal, but the longer it could take. That is because they may work in that area, and only come by infrequently. ALSO, if they make too many mistakes(like include sites THEY or a friend did that aren't GREAT, or include sites that were more appropiate elsewhere), they may be called to task, and demoted. If the area is small enough, and your site good enough, you COULD apply to be an editor. Just plan on sticking around a bit.

I'm in DMOZ,

They don't want redundant listings. If you want to submit a site about let's say list building then what makes your site any different than those they already have?

It has to be a highly ranked site if you are in a competitive niche or you have to have a unique site within the category.

I have ULC Radio in under Spirituality and Religion. There is already a listing for the ULC (Universal LIfe Church) and I have a unique site based on the Universal Life Church. The Universal Life Church Radio Program or ulcradio, ties in with the larger ULC.

If you want to list with a competitive niche then you need to be a more specific or a unique part of the whole.

I was a DMOZ editor but I think my login information was expired because I've not logged in for around four months already. If it goes to a category with an editor like me who forgot to logon because of busy in IM business then you are waiting for nothing. What am advising you is to apply it yourself to a smaller category first.

You just submit and forget. It's a great link to have, but what can you do? Actually, what you can do is post something on rent-a-coder and pay to have an editor add your site.

  Yes, it is. There's a guidelines on it and if some editors see your site, they will probaby remove your site and even the editor who added it, unless your site is of good quality. There's a discussion about this in the dmoz editor's forum to keep the directory have quality sites.

No, it should not. However, doing such a task every month might be overkill.

I would included this step in the development of any type of website.

I have a hobby content site on DMOZ. It does take a very long time to get listed (that is if they like your site). The biggest impact is that you get some pagerank juice from it.

  I started a new niche blog in May of this year, submitted my site to DMOZ after a few weeks of adding articles to my blog and was indexed about 2 weeks later.
  
  That was fast and I have received a few visits to my blog from DMOZ.
  
  I had tried with a website around a year ago and that never got indexed with them.

DMOZ never updates anything anymore. Pick a page and watch it for 6 months or a year - you might see one new site added, if you're lucky. I don't even bother submitting my sites anymore.

And what's funny is that you look at the site and they claim they need new volunteers, and then you volunteer, and they always deny you. Every time, no matter what category you choose to edit. I'm starting to think it's a fraud.

One of my sites is in DMOZ - it's a local business directory site. I had to submit the site twice - it was approved shortly after the second submission - about 8 months after the site was started. (July 2007) I slowly built some quality, relevant links and got some .edu and .gov links as well.

After the first submission I changed the meta tags to closely match the first 25 words of text, including key words on the first page of the site. (Site uses Wordpress.) I also edited a lot of the text to clean up some keyword redundancy and excess wordiness. Everything on the site is related to the site, the name of the site, the domain name and the first 25 words of text.

I have no idea if these changes were what made the site acceptable but I was a pretty happy camper to see the site accepted!
