When does too targeted keywords become a waste of time?

I was doing some research on the internet and this thought occurred to me.

Let's say Im doing a website about printers.
I could focus all my SEO efforts on a keyword such as: wireless printers
or I could focus on a product specific keyword such as: HP 8600

The problem is that if someone who is typing 'HP 8600' into the search engines, then they are probably ready to buy that printer and will most likely just go straight to Amazon or whoever they can buy it from at that time.

If they search for 'HP 8600 review' then this means that they somehow already know about that printer model from somewhere and are looking for more reviews on it? How do they know about that printer already? They must have already been to Amazon to see it, but want more info first before buying? So is that customer really going to click an affiliate link that goes right back to Amazon? I don't think so.

So...Im thinking that the best solution is just to focus on ranking for a 'category' type of keyword so that the user can find you when they type in, 'wireless printer reviews'? That way your website will have a huge selection of printers instead of just hoping someone will find your website by searching for a specific model of printer that they already know about from somewhere else?

Besides, models come and go year in and year out so why waste all of your SEO efforts on ranking for HP 8600 when next year that model will be discontinued?

    xTrav,

You can go either way but really it doesn't matter how the know about the product beforehand. There can be thousands of reasons of how they know about it. If they are looking for reviews is because there obviously interested. In this case you write an honest review of the printer, and what other people like and don't like. After that you offer them a link to where they can get the best price for that printer "Get the best price for the Hp 6000 here" and that'll be your affiliate link.

We ( marketers) know their affiliate links. Some people might know you will get a commission, but most will think your just providing them the link of where they can get the best price for their printer. They buy, you get paid.
