Resources/Links page...don't do it - here's why

There are a lot of headaches with running a business online. Let me tell you about one of my biggest ones.

When I launched my first product, I was attempting to make a very good, well rounded site with a lot of information other than just a sales page.

As such, I threw up a resources page. In the beginning I linked only to people that were within my niche, but occasionally I saw something that I liked outside of my niche.

This was common practice in the old days, but please...just don't do this.

I get emails constantly for link exchange requests, where I'm given the same old spiel about how reciprocal linking is beneficial, which it is not -- it's dangerous.

The emails are sometimes forceful...and sometimes polite. I just delete them before even opening them...but today I got one that topped it all.

I had a person email me, trying to use the "I'm being helpful" ploy. The messages pointed out certain broken links that are on my resources page. None of these links are broken. Those sites are still there and the destination of the links are SOLID.

They attempted to bribe me with "I will provide you with a complete list of broken links in your resources page if you link to my site"...

Pathetic, desperate and stuck in the past with what worked 10 years ago.

I fault myself for ever creating such a page. DON'T do it. It's harmful to your site, degrades the value of your site, and if you are still chasing link partners, then you need to wake up.

If someone links to your site out of choice = AWESOME.

If you have to get a 2 way link = you are on the wrong track.

As a side not..constantly people DO abuse my contact email which is supposed to be only for customer support. I'm sent emails all the time telling me how they can rank my site better for such and such keyword, or make my sales copy stronger....Talk about scraping the bottom of the pit to drum up clients. If you are doing this, get off your damn butt and do something more profitable for yourself and more helpful. Stop doing the damn "cold calling" of IM.
