Do you find it easy to give advice, but struggle to take your own advice?

There is some great advice on this forum and some excellent suggestions but do many of us find it easy to give advice to others but more difficult to take our own advice and act on it?

For some posters that may be the case; but I suspect not for others (at least when it comes to the ones I respect). Despite what many think, it's not very easy to just pull advice out of your ass, especially on a forum where everything you say is recorded and searchable. Lies aren't that easy to keep up around here, so instead posters base what they say on their own experience.

I'd hate to brand it "lying", as it's a strong term, but it strikes me that puzzling advice is sometimes liberally disseminated if it serves some sort of personal "agenda", frequently in accordance with whatever is thought to cast a product/service in the most useful, favourable light in the context of a given discussion.

(As you'll no doubt have seen, this practice seems especially prevalent in threads on the topic of, or involving, search engine optimisation, among other things. )

We draw our own conclusions from these things, of course. But there's little doubt in my own mind that some (much) of what is commercially preached in the world of IM/MMO, by way of "systems" and the like, is pure fabrication and not realistically practicable to positive effect by anyone, including the seller themself.

Many will scoff at such comments until they're blue in the face, making the point that value can be gleaned even from the thinnest and shabbiest of products, as though to justify misrepresentation through nefarious advertising and make customers feel guilty and unreasonable in their demands, but that doesn't in any way negate the truth of the matter or the simple point that if a product can't deliver on specific claims (i.e., isn't fit for purpose), one has no business making them.

If you don't believe in your own advice enough to act on it, what are you doing pushing it onto others?

    (Only asking rhetorically. )

There may be times when the advice I give to someone else doesn't very much apply to me and my business, but if it and when does, I'll have no qualms about adhering to it.

I'd wager that you're perhaps asking more about motivational or organisational advice?

In that sense, I'm occasionally guilty. For example, every so often I advise those struggling with procrastination to draw up a task-list and not worry so much about tackling things in any strict order; yet, from time to time, I'll hit a figurative brick wall and for some reason refuse to substitute another task until such a time as I'm capable of actually solving the problem facing me. I suppose arises out of the fear that if I can't put my finger on what's holding me back now, I'll never be able to, and so I must persevere against all odds. "No time like the present," and all that jazz, you know.

Unfortunately, what happens is I end up sitting unproductively, staring at a blank screen for an age and then, when flustered and p*ssed to the max, needlessly calling it a day having achieved nothing.

So, yes, I suppose I see what you mean after all. I'm trying!!!! :p

I have found a new momentum since joining this site and do actually look at my own comments and advice in great detail - and now act on it - before actually posting it.

I believe that those who give advice are speaking from experience. I think if I didn't have experience with getting leads or copywriting, I wouldn't be able to give advice about those things. I don't play football so I'd never give advice on how to pass or score a touchdown. Would you if you've never played the game before?

You do have to go with the advice that resonates with you though. People approach online marketing in different ways and have varying results. Go with what you feel is right as far as advice goes.

Am afraid, there are some people that are like that. They are good in giving advice and the advice too can be grand but they personally don't follow their own rules.

I have seen Pastors who say do what i say and don't do what i do.

    In a word, no. :-)

Here's why: anyone who's been in IM for a few years has made lots of mistakes. Since we've made the mistakes that people ask about, we can share what we know.

It's all too easy to make mistakes in IM because of the constantly changing Web. What works for Google today may not work tomorrow.

That said, the fundamentals of IM stay the same. IM is marketing. You're promoting and selling to people.

Sometimes giving advice is just reminding someone of marketing fundamentals. It's too easy to lose sight of these when you're chasing Bright Shiny Objects.

    Cheers

Yeah sometimes I do that a lot. I'll tell people not to buy too many products and to focus on one method and then I'll go right ahead and buy a WSO. Sometimes I can't help myself

The advice i give is the same advice that i follow in my business. The thoughts in your mind and heart is a reflection of who you are and what kind of quality information you're able to give out.
